I've done it many times...as a kid in the 70's and as an adult. This is the ideal trip to tackle the Fordyce, particularly if you aren't familiar with it.

The river flow is low, so crossing isn't a concern, all the hard winch hills are manned with crews, guides and winches to make sure you sail on through and the food and entertainment at the lake is excellent.

Highly recommended. And yes...family friendly, vendors, dancing.....

Winch Hill 2 will be camping on the trail again, so we'll be out on the hill as long as there are paying participants on the trail. And if for some reason you find yourself trapped on the trail through the night (which I don't think has ever happened on Trek thanks to the hard working drag crews) we'll gladly put you up for the night at Winch Hill 2.

Does drag go all the way through the trail?

It used to. Back when there was a full trail run on sat. I think the all of the runs had their own drag but a few broken rigs were sometimes left while getting fixed. But the Saturday day run would pick up all that were left behind. I don't know what happens now, essentially Friday day run is the last run through the whole trail.

Each run has its own drag crew and they are committed to getting all participants off the trail. What that means is - Drag will follow the run and help get the broken or disable rig back safely. Depending on the run and location this could mean exciting out the committee crossing or being winched or pulled into meadow.

I've never been to Sierra Trek, but I've heard there might be some options for lesser-built rigs that aren't Fordyce-worthy, is this true? I haven't really been able to find much info on all the other runs that happen besides the ones on Fordyce, only that there is an "SUV run" - perhaps someone can provide info on what trail it is or what its difficulty rating is?

I've got a mildly built 93 Yota x-cab (33s, 4.88s, rear locker, sliders, rear bumper) that I'm fairly certain isn't going to cut it on Fordyce, and a stock 100-series with only 33s that needs to get used more like a Cruiser should be used instead of being a pavement pounder.

from the Cal4 page

This year we are bringing back two-day SUV and the ATV/UTV runs. The two-day SUV run explores the back roads of the Meadow Lake and is guaranteed to offer fantastic views of the High Sierra, Lake Tahoe, and the Rubicon River Valley. This run can be done with a stock vehicle that is equipped with 4WD.

yeah, that's pretty much all I've found as well and I thought it was fairly non-specific -- so is it just fire roads then?

Hi,

Sierra Trek offers a couple of different runs that may suit your needs.

As Keith pointed out we are offering 2 separate SUV runs that travels back roads of the area and incorporates historical information about the surrounding geographical sights. These can be done in a stock vehicle that is equipped with 4 wheel drive.

If your looking for something a bit more challenging but dont want to transverse the Fordyce trail, We are offering a Saturday run called "Outer Limits" This run will tackle the Bear Valley Loop trail which is located approximately 16 miles NE of Truckee. http://www.norcalttora.com/trails/bear_valley.php. Of course there is plenty roads to explore in and around meadow lake as well.

What is the story about fire restrictions.

- Will Camp fires only be permitted inside a pay camp site or will it be as loose as it has been as long as you have a fire permant.
- There is talk about canceling Trek atleast every other year about fire danger. Whats the word on this???

As with all of the entire Tahoe National Forest, Fire restrictions are in place. Campfires will be permitted only in developed campgrounds and other designated sites, in the metal rings/grills provided. No fires will be allowed outside of the PGE camp ground located along meadow lake (these are pay sites that are regulated by a camp host and are not affiliated with CAL 4) Any fires outside the designated area are subject to fines. If you would like to find out where you can have camp fires, please see me at Meadow lake and I will be happy to direct you.

The Sierra Trek Main fire is permitted by the forestry service and is on Private land. The forestry will be out to check on the fire pit and that we have a water truck on hand in case of an emergency.

For the record, Sierra Trek is not and will not be cancelled this year do to fire restrictions. Only one year has been cancelled due to fire restrictions and well an actual fire in South Shore. 99% of what is heard about Sierra Trek being canceled due to fire restrictions is Rumors. Heck I heard it was going to be cancelled last year due to fire restrictions and there was still 3 feet of snow on the ground in some spots.

If you have any additional questions or comments please let me know

What are the best options for a green sticker vehicle tow rig ?

- drop my rig at the trailhead and drive the tow rig around to Meadow Lake and walk the trail back down to it?
- Leave the tow rig at Cisco and drive back down the trail on Sunday?

Did I miss any other choices ?? doh?

Note: signed up for the Friday Fordyce run

If you signed up for the full trail run. Drop your rig at the trail head and get someone with a street legal rig to follow you to Cisco, drop off your tow rig and ride back to your rig and run the trail. Sunday drive back down the trail, but exit out to Cisco.
If you signed up for the river run you have options.
1) Tow into Meadow lake
2) Park at Cisco and head in through Fordyce lake exit Sunday the way you came in.

Leave your buddy with rig at trailhead.

Tow over to Cisco Grove Campground.

Walk back to trailhead. Do friday run.

On sunday run the trail backwards to committee and out, which goes to the campground. (this is what our group does every year)

Just a reminder, the PGE camp site is a pay per use site and the camp hosts are in. If you are planning on camping in the PGE Campground for Sierra Trek, you can reserve your camping spot at PG&E reservation system by calling 916-386-5164 or www.pge/recreation.

Cal 4 wheel does not pay for these sites and they are first come first serve.

FYI this will be the only location that fires will be allowed besides the Main Sierra Trek Fire.
