Trail Work September 14th
The FOF and Tahoe National Forest rangers will be on the trail doing some trail repair work on $40k hill. As we discussed in our public meeting this year a section of the new trail we built to bypass the large mudhole at mile 6.5 did not hold up as expected and has created a dangerous situation. We'll change/repair the section to get rid of the roll hazard. While we're there we'll also survey for a possible slight reroute to bypass the section altogether.
There may be delays while we work so if you come up the trail Friday please be patient while we clear the trail.

Just curious if your gonna bypass/close it entirely or maybe leave it as an option.
I haven't had a chance to wheel that section yet and was actually looking forward to trying it out.

Good idea Bret. That section for someone not as experienced and in different circumstances could be bad. I agree that route although fun, should be fixed or rerouted.

Our aim is to leave the section there with an easy line and a hard line.
There will be no signs indicating hard or easy lines. Also, there will be no paving. There's plenty of hard stuff on the trail. When we need to create a new section we're doing it for environmental reasons. Our goal is not to create a bunch of new obstacles and if we do so because of an error in layout or unforseen problems with the stability of a section we need to do something about it. Just as no one wants to pave the trail we don't want to create an artificial off road park. The beauty of the Fordyce trail is it's natural flow. There are places like Prarie City for those that want man made challenges. It's funny that everytime we talk about working on the trail there are those (no critisizm just stating a fact) that want all hard stuff to stay yet it is almost impossible to keep people from breaking through our barricades to get to what are easier sections of the trail that we've had to close due to uncontrolled errosion.

Too bad this is happening on Friday and not sat.
A few of us are running the trail, but would definitely help if needed. Keith

We accomplished our goal of creating a new safe line on the left while keeping a harder alternate line on the right. We even threw the debris from the work in front of the hard line making it even more challenging. You're welcome! Before and after:

The Forest Service did all of the blasting. It is really an small charge, without the water in the hole it sounds like a party popper.

Thanks for the work!!
We did a day run sat. Down to the first water crossing. We were planning on heading up and checking it out, but we had a rig break that we had to weld on the trail, so we ran outta time. Looks great!! Can't wait to see it next time around! Keith
