Got this today:
"Although the fire season is progressing on the Tahoe NF in a fashion that we used to call "normal", the typical indices that we use to restrict fires to "safe" areas, have not been reached yet. The public, however, is used to us implementing fire restrictions annually. In some years, the number of fire restrictions increases have had significant impacts on the public mostly related to "internal combustion engine use on NFS trails and roads"... (limiting OHV use). In that last ten years, we have implemented fire restrictions any where from the end of May to early July. * In 5 of the 10 years, we increased the restrictions by the end of July. * In one of those years, we increased the restrictions a third time. * Only once in the last ten years...2003?...we did not have any fire restrictions. Given the late snow/rains, the less than stellar heat and cool nights to-date, there is a strong possibility we may not need to implement fire restrictions this year. The type of circumstances which we would cause us to seriously consider implementing fire restrictions would be situations such as an aggressive drying trends (for example, several days of strong E-NE winds), or have a significant lightning/multiple large wildfires that depletes our initial attack capability. So, the answer is the we may not go into fire restrictions this year, unless weather patterns change." Hope for continued cool weather and no E-NE winds but still be careful with the fires!

Campfires 7/1/12
Just saw a ranger down at Prosser Res., Truckee ca. He stated today is the first day of fire restrictions. Campfires are allowed at registered campgrounds in designated firepits only, no permit required. Gas stoves are allowed anywhere but only with a campfire permit. He said all info is available on the TNF website.
Happy camping! |

Per TNF's web page:
Fire Restrictions in the TNF Starting July 1 Date(s): Jun 28, 2012 Due to dry conditions, fire restrictions will be in effect starting July 1, 2012.* Under these restrictions campfires are only permitted in developed campgrounds and other designated sites.* In the backcountry, portable stoves including those that use gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are permitted with a valid campfire permit.* Propane-type Bar-B-Q's can be used outside designated sites where camping is permitted, but charcoal Bar-B-Q's can only be used in designated sites.* Smoking is only permitted in an enclosed vehicle or developed recreation site.* Internal combustion engines including off highway vehicles can continue to operate on roads or motorized trails and within the Prosser Pits OHV area. Yep, found out first hand last weekend. Didn't read up on the restrictions that came early this year and got ourselves a warning from the camp host our first night. Camped in the meadow near the lake and paid the price - literally eaten alive by mosquitos and biting flies, which can usually be kept at bay(mostly) with a fire.
Had to pack up and head out early it was so bad. It was like the things were attracted to the bug spray we bathed in. Get a camp site with a fire permit or wear Carhartts all day in the 95 degree heat when hanging out at camp.

This is no time for campfires. It’s even more imperative that abandoned campfire should be 100% extinguished and not just 80%. This holds true thoughout out the year. It seems obvious but apparently not between Friday evening and Saturday 6am just above the water tank during Trek. Just saying….don’t be a dumbfawkstick.

The web pages says fire-ban is still in effect.
Haven't they gotten a bit of rain (even snow) over the last few weeks? Who remembers when it usually gets lifted? (Last year there were 6-12" of Snow & it never got above 30* during the first week of Oct.). Last edited by MochaMike; 10-16-2012 at 01:30 PM. |

I spoke with TNF last week and asked if they expected the ban to be lifted anytime soon. The answer was a resounding NO!
Not until we get a substantial storm.

Put Your Fires Out
Went for some easy wheeling today 21st to check out the lake and falls. While driving past camping spots on the way to the dam, saw 2 fire rings with smoldering logs, went on to below dam. On the way back 20min later, saw the logs in full flame with sparks blowing from incoming storm, and pine needles everywhere. Got out the shovel and did a complete bury of rings. Seems to me, if a person can light a fire they can also put it out. Plus I think it's still no campfires, as it's dry as hell out there.

I hate finding fires not put out.
Hopefully after tomorrow it will be a non issue. Thanks for taking the time to do what others should have.
