Nice story. Who is Charlene Bower? She writes REALLY well, it flows REALLY nicely, and she gets in some land-use thoughts without beating readers over the head with it.
She nailed it here: As an off road enthusiast, I think the greatest part of my trail riding experience isn't necessarily the bumping over the rocks, but the exploring and fascination with the rock formations and the history that is buried under the overgrowth of bushes and trees. This is something that we as off roaders understand and respect, but few on the outside who are trying to close our trails can comprehend. The mines alongside Fordyce are sweet destinations for day-tripping. On the hottest day, it is nice and cool in the nooks andcrannies of Old Man Mountain, and it is well worth the hike up to the General Grant Mine, but the altitude WILL kick your butt if you are a flatlander! I haven't walked around to Phoenix Lake yet, but I hear the town is still in OK (but crumbling) shape due to its distance. The Excelsior Mine and Glory Hole are up near Summit City / Meadow Lake, but are picked over, being too close to a 2WD-accessible road. I've heard the Anderson Mine is worth the hike too, but have not done it yet.The sweet smell of rain on the tall trees, soft dirt and warm rocks is something that many so-called "enviromentalists" sitting behind a desk in a big city probably have never smelled. Makes me feel like I was there. ![]() Stover has good coverage over at FourWheeler: http://blogs.fourwheeler.com/6570746...yce/index.html This picture of Mello cracked me up -- the life of a privateer racer: ![]() Is that an early prototype Krawler? GREAT article! Randii
