Re-route Workday Part 2 October 24th
Trail re-route around mud hole at mile 6.2
Workday date: October 24, 2009 Location: Mile 6.2 from Indian Springs trailhead Time: 9 am Note: Scheduled workdays will be completed based on access due to water release volume and weather conditions. One of the unique aspects of working on Fordyce is the difficulty in sometimes just getting to the work area. Mile 6.2 is about as far in from any access point as any place on the trail so we will meet at the work location instead of meeting at the trailhead and driving in together. This way we will have a definite start time on site. Camping there the night before is suggested. Camping after the day's work is recommended so we can all celebrate the hard day's work with a complimentary BBQ. We'll continue cutting the trail through the brush and in addition will be busting rock with the help of the TNF and their "Mega-buster!" Water release is scheduled to be down to minimal for the October 24th workday. As always, be prepared for the worst while traversing the Fordyce trail. Weather can change rapidly and breakdowns are always a possibility. Never plan on just a day trip. Always carry ample food, water, clothing and camping gear in case the unexpected occurs. Your rig should be equipped with a CB tuned to channel 40 for FOF communications. Cell service is available on the Fordyce trail in most locations so a charged up cell phone is a great emergency link. If you are planning on attending the workday please e-mail me at bret@fordycetrail.org. Include whether you will be staying for dinner. We need to get a count for food. Remember, there will be a BBQ dinner courtesy of the FOF and BFG as well as numerous other indivdual contributers and of course NAXJA. We'll also provide gloves, safety glasses and loppers for the volunteers use. We want to thank everyone in advance for considering this workday. We know it's late in the year, not a lot of notice, and time is at a premium these days. Thank you,

We sure do. To be more accurate it is more like rock splitting. As cool as some good old TNT would be, there will not be huge amounts of flying debris.

no flying debris??? how fun could that be? can i just stand there and throw debris around to make it seem more intense?
truck is pretty much ready, so i am there for sure. will be the test run for my new p.o.s. for now weather.com says no rain up the mountain til monday, but its a good idea to go equipped for wet weather. theres not exactly a shopping center up there to take your mall rig to and go jacket shopping. |

We have a good size group arriving at Cisco around 8 am. I will be going in from Eagle lakes, as well as a couple others. Some are going Commitee. We're there for a B-day wheeling trip, but I'm going to try to talk every one in to helping out for a couple of hours.

might be SOL changed the oil on the jeep tonight i've been nursing along a weak motor all year. even with the good ole straight 50wt trick ive got 2 psi cold at idle and 0 hot 20 psi at 3000 rpm but only 5 psi at 1500 rpm I think she died her death on the way to the parts house. unless one of you guys wants to drag me out when the bottom end starts rattling I think i am down for the count. I can hike in but the chain saw, clippers and pulaski might need a lift. I was crossing my fingers on making this i didnt take the jeep the last two trips because of the rapidly falling oil pressure in hopes that i could still make this trip. I've got another short block ready to go for the last 6 weeks just the pistons have been on back order for 6 weeks. heart breaker. going to try changing out timing cover and oil pump spring tonight but things ain't looking good.

Dumb question- Where is the mud hole/meeting site in relation to the other landmarks on the trail? Before/after WH1, etc?
I can't remember. I know I'll run into it eventually, but... Edit- nevermind I think I figured it out. Looks like its probably a mile or so before WH1, just about straight southwest of old man mountain. Maybe half way between the first crossing and WH1 so that should be pretty quick and easy to get to. I was thinking it was further in. I'll be there with my 12 year old and my friend in another 4runner. Coming in Fri. eve. Last edited by ErikB; 10-22-2009 at 06:35 PM. |
