Couldn't you run the 3 speed or ax-15, NV3500. Or does the trans have to be an option for that year?

OK, not up to speed with the rule book.

But the AW4 should have came in TJ`s

Only option for an auto is 42RLE.

Rule book says any trans that came in that year/make/model so we only have one auto choice.

Should have as in they should have offered it, or should have as in I think they did but I'm not sure?

It was never an option likely due to it's slightly longer length which would make the rear driveshaft very short in the stock configuration.

But, yes, I agree that it should have been adapted into the TJ from Day 1 and they should have made a shorter tailshaft adapter to shorten it up enough to work.

As in it should have been a factory OEM offering instead of an 42. Even if it was limited to the LJ.

In fact I recall one SOB who made that swap with his wife's TJ.

Wow, that's not much of a choice. Any build plans for the 42RLE? I think I saw an Atlas behind it, correct?

Looking back at your thread I actually like yours better than what I just built, but since our cages are a bit different your design wont work for me

Right now I'm working on mounting my seat. Johns will be on a slider which may or may not be easier to mount. Adding to the challenge is our choice of belts. We're using Hooker Harnesses with the ratcheting adjusters, which IMO is hands down the best thing you can have holding your ass in. The difficult part is that you have to mount the ratchet end of the lap belt where you can get at it, and operate the ratchet. I've used these belts in both Dustins TJ, and Roger Lovells buggy, and though they worked in both, it was a bit awkward to get to the ratchet while driving. My goal is to make these ones a bit more accessible.

The 42rle has been completely gone thru but there is not much after market support for it. Any plastic parts have been repalced. It is a electronically controlled OD so we are using the OEM computer to control it.

The torque converter is were we spent money to make it last. All of the plastic has been removed and the fins brazed so they don't detonate at speed. Then balanced and tested.

Atlas 3.0 behind the tranny.

Gerald, coming from the OEM transmission industry. The TQ convertor work was money well spent. All to often folks "beef" the transmission internals and then cheap out on properly preparing a convertor for abuse.

By chance did you get to raise the stall speed any ?

Gerald, the lack of aftermarket support is surprising. I've got the same tranny in my LJ, and when AA came out with the Rubicrawler, I thought that would prompt other companies to come out with some additional pieces, but there hasn't been much. I think there is a guy on JF who has had excellent success with some different valve bodies. I haven't paid much attention as I plan to put an LS motor and GM tranny in my LJ when the driveline grenades.

LS motor in the LJ is what is in my future as well!

Oh how I love the feeling of red hot metal goobers raining down on me as I weld the inside of a cage, especially when I'm in an awkward position and cant move enough to shake out the one that lands on the inside of my thigh and sticks.

I like the cage with the b-pillar pushed back some for head & seat clearance, but it also pushes the rear seat bar back and up for extra headache with the rear seat tabs. I've been watchin this thread to see how you end up pulling it off.

Yeah we decided to push the b-pillar back quite a bit for a few reasons, seat clearance being the biggest one. If you keep the b-pillar in the stock location you end up having to bend the shoulder bar around the back of the seats, or weld it to the horizontals going back to the C-pillar. It also makes putting the diagonal cross bracing in really difficult. You also end up with the B-pillar right next to your head if you move the seat back any, which is not so great in a hard roll. By moving ours back we are able to keep everything nice and straight and strong, with lots of room for occupants.

Here's how the passenger seat mount came out. At first I really didn't like how it was working out, but I just kinda went with it, and now that it's finished I actually like it. I also got a lot of the passenger door bars done.
