14 bolt R&P install NOW - need help
Just heated up my Thick 5.38 ring to install on 4.11 down carrier and think I have the wrong ring gear bolts. I'm holding off on my expletive laced rant until I know for sure, but do the thick gears require the longer 2.1" ring bolts or the standard 1.8" for the smaller gear set/carrier. I ordered new 1.8 bolts from Randy's and I'll be a Mother F if I needed the longer ones. Need this POS together by the weekend. Anybody?

I never thought about needing longer bolts, but I recenty set up thick cut 5.38s on arbs (f/r) and the stock length bolts worked fine. I didn't heat the ring gear, just eased it on with a dead blow. Maybe someone else can chime in if maybe I did mine wrong?!?!

In my experience, the longer bolts are for the 4.56 and up carrier. The 4.10 and down carrier uses the short bolts.
You have heated the ring gear, but is it flush with the flange? Are you asking about longer bolts to draw it on the carrier? Or do the bolts you have not seem long enough even with the gear flush against the flange? Are you sure it is a 4.10 and down carrier?

2x on the longer bolts with the 4.56up
Also double checking your not pulling thd gear up on the face. Lastly they are 1/2 -20 grade 8 bolts you can buy at any parts store for cheap enough it wont hurt your weekend good luck

I'm with you fellas on the shorter bolts for the 4:11 & down carrier. That's why I ordered them from Randy's. However, the dilemma is with the thick gears. Obviously, on the thinner stock ring gear, I can't use the longer bolts as they would bottom out. But these thick 5:38's are deep as fuk and I was curious if I should have used the larger carrier ring bolts as they would surely fit. The heated ring gear is not in the equasion. I should not have even mentioned it. I heated it because the thick mother chucker ring gear was not motivated to get past the carrier lip. Voila! Heater up and it slid right on. I will go with the 1.8 bolts and dare it to come apart. Again, if anybody has used the thick gear with 4.11 & down carrier and think I should use the longer ring bolts, please chime in

Wouldn't you want the correct bolts that have a shoulder on them in the area that goes through the carrier? I don't think I would want a bolt with threads in this area and shorter common bolts have threads most all the way up the shank. Although I'm not certain on common 1.8" bolts.
