Ok, the best trans ever part may be up for debate but I wanted to show you guys what I am working on for an all wheel drive muscle car I have been building for the last few years. The T-56 6 speed is one of the most popluar performance transmissions ever build. They are touted to handle 1000hp and shift as smooth as silk up to and over 7000rpm. I remember this question being asked on here before with no clear answer so I wanted to do that now. Now i know that some are going to say that a car trans will not live in a big 4x4, well I have no idea on that. Just wanted to show what I am up to.

I started off with a T-56 transmission and thinking that I may run it in a divorced setup but really did not want the length, extra parts or weight of all that (I am obsessed with weight on this build). What I ended up building is a hybrid of a few different applications of the T-56. You can also build this one 2 different ways depending on what output spline you may need, 27 spline or the big 32. The 27 will be easier since you can pick up just about any LT1 or LS1 T-56 and change the tail shaft and shifter. The 32 spline like I am doing is a bit more difficult and costs more, but is WAY stronger plus has better synchro/blocker rings to improve high RPM shifting. The key to this whole thing is a relatively easily obtainable C5 corvette T-56 tail shaft and a mid mount shifter which is available from Keilser for $400

What I am doing is using a C5 T-56 with a Chevy SSR main shaft (32 spline) and 1st gear with its retainer with a mid plate from a Viper. The C5 gives you the better synchro's vs the older viper/ls1 style T-56. Wrap up the trans with the C5 tail, then adapt another tail to that to make up some room. I am using the tail shaft from a 545rfe auto trans because, well I had one laying around and it is just about the right size, shape and has the NV 6 bolt transfer case flange at the back. Plus it has a transmission mount cast into it unlike the C5 tail. The C5 T-56 is usually a little cheaper as well since it is not as popular in the aftermarket swap arena.

I expect to be done with this in about a week. I am waiting on a few pieces of 3/4 thick aluminum so I can make some adapter plates both for between the tail housings and the transfer case because I need to flip my nv147 t case to the passenger side. I will put up a few shots of it when it is all done

Here is the stock C5 T-56

Here I have my T-56 assembled with the Viper mid plate, C5 input shaft and SSR main shaft. I left all the other parts out because I am still in mock up and a 55 pound transmission is a lot easier to move around

Here is the 545rfe tail sitting on the back. Both tails have a large indexing ring that I will cut holes in the 3/4 aluminum to center everything

and my hybrid T-56 with the NV147 transfer case which has a 32 spline input shaft swapped into it. The 4 bolt flange you see is where the mid shifter will mount. Usually that is just for an inspection plate

Yeah, there are a few areas on the 147 that I need to address. A few bearing oil drain holes, vent holes and the oil pick up for sure.

It is going in my '68 Charger build

If you are really bored, check out the build thread

Interesting build. I like the idea of going with the old Charger 500 look and it shouldn't be that hard to locate the '68 Coronet grille. Most of those survived pretty well since the grille is aluminum and basically made like catwalk grating. Are you going to go with the rear plug an decklid for the full 500 conversion or just the grille? I'm not really sure I can even understand what is going on with that aluminum assembly in the front and rear suspension but it looks interesting. I pondered doing something like this in my head a few times but never could get around keeping the front diff centered to avoid torque steer and still keep the engine low in the chassis.

Neat project, I have a Ford toploader converted to a married 4wd tranny. Very simple, swap the output to the standard 31 spline ford and then had an adapter built by a vendor here off pirate, there's a few other upgrades due to the fpower I'll be running, but same idea you have. The only bad thing is the length of the adapter, went with a standard 24"mainshaft for parts availabilty (they make them brand new still), and its leaves me with a 10" long adapter, but I don't have driveshaft issues, so it really isn't a big issue, plus it leaves me more mounting options, I'll post up a few pictures of it in a bit.

Really dig the car too.

Looks really cool mustang, stuff like that is why I like pirate4x4 so much. Just about any other site I am on, everyone just wants to buy something off the shelf and bolt it on or get it in a kit, gets pretty annoying after a while

Well I do like the C500 rear, I have decided against it in the end. I want to put vents in the sail panels and dutchman panel (flat areas around the rear window) that are ducted to scoops. That will vent air out of there and stop the negative pressure. I have 1 Coronet grill now, may do something custom with that.

The front end is a push rod setup (rear is the exact same way too), the 1x1 aluminum is where the coilovers will go. I even ended up adding my sway bar setup to this. I have never really seen a setup like this, just built what I wanted

The front diff has to live way over on the passenger side, just something that had to be done and I will see how it goes. Also I agree that there are better transmission out there but this one is readily available in great numbers and not that expensive

That trans is sold by Rockland Standard Gear (rsgear.com). I talked to them about my build, cost $1600 for the 27 spline kit. Basically they sell you the C5 tail, their own steel tail shaft housing, a mid shifter and a 27 spline main shaft. They would also do the 32 spline but I did not get a price on that as I was going to use my Viper T-56 at first. The 32 Will fit into the Viper box but you would need about another $1000 in parts

Thanks, I really do owe all of my out of the box thinking to this site. There is nothing too hard or complicated that the guys on this board will not do. So glad that I did not fall into the bolt on crowd.

Does anyone happen to know if I can fit a wider chain into my 147/247 transfer case? The stock 1.00 inch wide chain is not the weak point in my drivetrain. Also the 27 spline output shaft. I would love an HD 1.25 chain and a stronger output but have not seen a good SYE for this

So far it has been my experience that these NV transfer cases can interchange a lot of parts, I am wondering if I get the sprockets and chain from a 1.25 wide application if I can put em in there

Hey guys, thanks for checking it out. As for that transfer case, I have not had any further progress with the transfer case and the car is not yet on the road so I cannot say anything on its strength's or attributes. I do still plan on running it after some modifications so it can survive being flipped. I did some reading into a possible HD chain, seems like nothing is available. You may be able to put in a 231 HD kit but that is purely speculation, really no idea. I never really saw someone say that they busted a chain when it was not expected so I do not think it is something to be of huge concern. For you the clutch may be a bigger issue where with me it is an attribute. My concern now is the RPM that it may see. I will be spinning it 10,000rpm for me to hit 160 which the car should be able to do

I did it for my Silverado SS, totally possible.

RSGear is why I decided to do it myself, total rip off and their customer service can suck my balls. If I can't get somebody on the phone to take my money, how will I get them on the phone when I have an actual problem with the install?

I used a GTO T56 donor, wanted beef so I swapped to the SSR 32 spline output and 1pc countershaft

I ended up using factory GM transfer case adapter with some custom plates and vette tail housing, running the 32 spline input on the NVG 149

I did the Keisler mid-shift conversion, pure junk just fab your own using the 03-04 Cobra Pro 5.0 shifter. I replaced the Keisler unit with the one I listed, oblonged/cut out holes and RTV'd it up. No leaks.

SY thanks for posting up, I think yours was one of the builds that I read over researching how to do mine. Do you have any of the shift rail continuing back from the shifter socket?

As a note to anyone else looking to build a trans like this, try to find a main shaft first. I have heard that they are discontinued and now hard to come by

toyworx, I read back thru my thread trying to find what material I used there. I do know that it is 5/8 round bar and is either 4140 or 4340. I am not sure if I will need to have the bar heat treated. Also it will be milled down to more of a thin blade to allow it to flex more. I have enough material to make a few sets of blades of different thicknesses that I can switch out

Hey no problem.

I cut the rail and don't have it continuing back, I was worried about it bending but so far so good :D

I used the roll pin to secure the shift selector and threw a lil bead of weld on it for good measure

My homies @ thegearbox.org have the SSR shaft in stock T56 6 Speed Transmission Parts & Rebuild Kits

Hey guys, thanks for keeping this project in mind. Neald, you have some good timing because just today I finished putting the transmission back together. Let me know if you have any questions or are looking to build something similar. As larryboy said, check that link for all of the updates on this build. Fingers crossed I will have it running by the end of next month

This is a great thread. I'm new to this forum but have been considering the T56 as a 4x4 trans for a while.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the Vette C6 Z06 (with the 1 pc counter) tail housing would bolt up to a T56 Magnum (which also has a 1 pc counter)? I may be able to get my hands on barely used one at a great price (and given they're rated at 700 ft lb torque out of the box), if the C6 tail housing was the same bolt pattern to the main case, this might be a viable option.
