Another cool vehicle bites the dust.
Someday.... I *really* want a portal cab forward truck capable of 65mph+ without $$$ parts (ie, pinz, mog) for expedition, but has to be comfortable on the highway as well.... I'm asking for too much out of a stock truck.

I was researching the VW LT45 4x4 truck and dug up some info I decided to share. I live in the northen parts of Sweden, and there some LT31 vans around the road. LT45 in various forms and shapes are very few and far between. Dont to mention the LT45 4x4, its virtually non-existant. BUT I actually saw one some weeks ago in the traffic (spotted the front diff). ..Thats like the second I ever saw around here. I was curious and decided to Web-Wheel. This is what I found out about it..
The LT45 is (as stated earlier) equipped with Dana60 front and rear and a Dana TC. Dont know exactly what kind, havent found any pics. Pretty cool truck. Cool pic From what I have read (babelfished) VW & Pinzgauer decided in the early ninetys to make a prototype LT45 truck with portals called the "Noriger". It was only made like 10-20 and 5-6 are belevide to still be around. http://www.zuckerfabrik24.de/steyrpuch/Pinzgauer1.htm Babelfish: "Steyr Puch Noriker on the basis VOLKSWAGEN of the LT 45 4x4 developed with Steyr Puch in the years 1990-1992 some prototypes of a durable area Lkws with 1.5 to 2 tons of pay load. Portal axles with leaf springs and thrust props vo+hi, disc brakes, engine VOLKSWAGEN LT turbo-Diesel with 115 HP, 5-Gang-Getriebe (partly ZF Automtic) all wheel, reduction (VG of MAN ONES) and barriers. The development of the chassis did not come in Graz, therefore is missing exact information, from where e.g. the portal axles come, probably from GB Since neither those were ready for the purchase Swiss nor the oesterreichsiche army, it remained with 8 prototypes. The Noriker illustrated here (Bj. 1992, Erstzulassung 1996, 15000 km) has the No. P22 (2nd series, 2. Vehicle), one of 5 or 6 still "living persons". - thanks at Wolfgang Mueller for information -" Anyway I was curious of the portals. I dug up this page: http://www.lt-4x4.de/Norikerbilder-Fahrgestell.htm Which had some sweet pics of the portals! Is the axle some dana stuff? Would be cool if it was.. What speaking against that is the stock selectable locker -Everyone knows that the US doesnt want stock lockers in anything ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

No Dana parts here! I have seen the existing ones in person, and forget about finding an Noriker that is for sale! Parts for the axles are impossible to find, t case is ZF. You can find 4x4 VW LT made by Sulzer. Avoid older Sulzer LT because they used Dana axles (60 f 70R) and an NP208 T case, they had lots of problems with the axles and T cases. The axle where not able to hold up on the Autobahn, and always leaked. The newer units used better ZF T cases and better axles with selectable lockers instead of detroits like they had in the Dana axles. There is one bad thing that they all share ! They are underpowered. They use an inline 6 Diesel with 2.4L Turbo and non Turbo.

So is it the consensus that axles, portals and transfercase were made by Steyr?
Yea, I think open knuckle Dana axles and Detroits would be present unacceptable maintenance and driveability headaches in wet European conditions. Bill. Last edited by Agrover; 05-06-2006 at 01:36 AM. |
