Steel prices in general, in my experience, are more about the account you're buying on than anything else.
The place I get mine from wanted about $11/ft when I called in as an every day Joe off the street. That price went down to $4/ft when I called back an hour later and gave them my buddy's account name.
This sounds pretty accurate. Its too bad they don't really give a shit about home builder accounts. I get the reasoning behind it but more than double or triple the price is a big FU.
I had better luck talking to a salesman as opposed to the cashier/cust. service people up front who just quote you whatever comes up on their computer.
Was looking at buying a piece of custom built equipment, they told me the price will likely go up 10% by the end of summer because of steel costs... as in $5000ish more.
Though if that cost is going to the USA steel industry versus supporting China, I'm for it.
Anyone have an East Coast supplier in the Tri-State area ? "Roll Cage Components" has 1.75 x .120 listed at $4.09/Ft. but they are in CA (and that seems too low ?). Otherwise, I've only seen Allmetals Inc. @ $8.75 for 2" plus $100 shipping, or Stock Car Steel in NC for $7.59.
Used to get pretty decent prices here. Haven't ordered anything in about 10 years, so who knows,
but worth a shot I guess for anyone looking near the Newark NJ area.
Pacemaker is dropping off 1.75x.120 next Monday at $5.50 ft. 1.50x.25 at $11.50ft. They have always been the cheapest for me. Metal super market near me gets it from them and price is pretty much doubled. The plate and dom has gone up about 35% since mid January.
Whats crazy is the wild price variances.
In STL, MO after calling around for 1.75 .120 wall DOM, found anywhere from $5.90 to $25 per foot.
