The problem is partly because in a lot of places in that area, you simply cant because the ground is solid granite.

The other part of the problem isn't so much that that they can't, its that they JUST DON'T.
Why bother walking a hundred yards or so to some trees and dirt where they could do that when they can just squat behind the nearest boulder.

The bottom line is that people are too fucking stupid and lazy and careless.

Texas Blake, there are so many wheeling shitters in so small an area that the dirt would soon be all dug up. Shitting and then bagging it will simply remove all the dirt from the area. You'd really have to see (and smell) the area to appreciate the problem........... A big problem is that shitters simply don't give a shit and shit alllllllll over the place. Without burial. How can this happen, you ask ? Its dark, cold, and Mr. Shitter is shit-faced shitty drunk. He probably wont make 50 yards, so he sits and shits on top of the other shit that Mr. Other Shitter shit there. Its real, real shitty. When the FOTR and the Pirates go up in September and October to shovel other peoples shit, its either above freezing, shit, or below freezing, and it becomes "turds". Whats shitty is shit heads will drops THOUSANDS into there shitty fawkin bitchin Rockwells blah blah blah, but wont drop $15 on shit boxes, or $249 for the deluxe portable shitter... Fawk off shit heads ............!!!! Shitters at Cabellas.com/camping-food/toilets Anyone that goes to Spider and Sluice without his own personal shitter or drop box is shitting onto the surface, and is shitting on the Rubicon......... Half the shittees leave paper blowin in the wind........ Thanks !!!!!!! Nice rig, where's your shitter ? If this happened to you in Texas, you'd simply lynch em'.....

Hey guys:
You should demand the same privileges the backpackers get. There's solar toilets all over Mt. Whitney, and Yosemite. Are you paying yet to access the Rubicon? I haven't been accross since 94. Something about the change of blairing country music to some new band called metallica. Now I just like easy listening like Godsmack.... Think about it guys, deal with the Forest Service, cuz you can't win the fight!!!! Politics and all, you will lose!!!
Keep up the fight! save the Rubicon for my grandchildren.
Scott

There are a couple of portable units that work VERY well. Check out Del's site at http://www.friendsoftherubicon.com.

Last weekend at spider (30' from the water ) we had two of the cardboard toilets and one PET toilet with a tent.

I know you guys don't want to here this but I'm going to say it anyways They need to start charging people to use the trail. How, I don't know but if they started charging people it would slow the traffic down or the forest service would make enough money to employ people to manage the problem.I don't know of too many forest service camp sites where you are not charged to camp.just an idea I would rather pay to use it rather then lose it

I'm with ya... I'll pay. I'd rather pay to use the Con then buy some stupid raffle ticket to finance someones competition costs.
I won't hold my breath though. I figure shut down is just around the corner.
This sport has so many lowlifes who don't care if it gets shut down.
They will just move on to something or someplace else and ruin it too.
I have worked in the water treatment field for 16 yrs. and I can tell you that water quality is an issue that will close things so fast it will make your head spin. If that is the angle the enviro's are taking (Spider water quality) we could lose access to it.
The solution is so simple people...... PACK #*IT OUT! or hold it.

people pay $25 to go to the movies/treats. I think $25 to $30 a rig would keep the lowlifes who don't care out of the con all together

Yup but that wont keep assholes out who dont give a shit about the land. In TX we have to pay to play. We routinely pay 35-40 bucks a weekend per vehicle and driver and 5 bucks for passengers. This usually includes primitive camping also.

You have to remember the average American is fat and lazy. If he makes his wife get him a beer, do you really think hes going to walk more than 20 feet to take a shit in a hole.

FOTR has been pulling together land owners, land managers, and myriad types of users for years now, and we've already had a bunch of these discussions:
http://www.delalbright.com/Rubicon/s...anitation2.htm

Sanitation for Rubicon is a huge issue... check out some of the past discussions at these links or over in the Rubicon Trail forum: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/forum...php?forumid=29
Helicoptered honey buckets, Unimog-mounted pumpers, solar composters, etc... we have discussed 'em. Digging cat-holes just isn't an option on the Rubicon's granite slabs, and even the areas that have diggable dirt lack the carrying capacity to account for the hundreds (+?) of recreationists that traffic every summer weekend. That's how we wind up packing along PETT toilets.

If you're gonna make any more than a day-trip on the Rubicon Trail, PLEASE pack out your poop and paper... along with anything else you pack in. If you don't, you are part of the problem.

well ,I guess that price would keep some people out not saying your part of the problem just stating that if you charge enough that it would slow the traffic down. I would pay $40 to $50 to injoy the trail once or twice a year

Crap and Wrap...

Here's two sources for several pack-it-out options online..............

Campmoor

Cabellas

These are available NOW. Nobody has to wait for a permanent toilet.

Iguess something needs to be done at this time. The email is looking to close the area for the rest of the summer..... FOTR might want to talk to this Mike Gray fella and try and midigate the issues even if that means and early clean up run, or an GIANT info sign at all entry points. Those little solar toilets work and could be placed all over the trail if that was the requirement. I think however there are other factors involved, who is the person sending the e-mail and what will they gain by the closer? Is this person just a greenie with a uniform ? Or are they legit FS employees looking out the for the good of all? And what would make them feel that FOTR can handle the issues. I wish I lived closer to the area, so I could help more.

I posted this in the other thread but I'll post it in this one as well.

This is my trail shitter, not quite a PETT but it works the same and is a fraction of the cost.

This stuff kills the smell and make it landfill safe

As you can see its just a toilet seat made for a 5 gal bucket

Its easy, just:
Line 5 gal bucket with garbage bag
Place seat on 5 gal bucket
Do your bidness
Pour a little SBG1 over it
Tie the bag up
Place in ammo can and forget about it.

The best part is I can dump in my tent and there is no need to find a "private" place

You can buy it from HERE
