PowCon plasma cutter, $100?

Found a PowCon Starcut plasma cutter, 80A which throws a pilot arc and blows but won't cut, for $100.

Worth it? Any idea whether whatever's wrong is common, I can fix, how much, or should I send it back to them for service? I've never had a PC before. Is this unit good? I searched and only found one reference to PowCon but it wasn't relevant.

I connected everything by the directions, which are clearly displayed on the side of the unit. I didn't do anything except hook it up, I didn't verify any of the connections at or inside the machine. It's had plenty of use, some of the cables aren't 100% so maybe something came loose inside.

I guess if that's all that's wrong with it, it's a good buy?

Ah...

Ok. I'll try it again with a DC power supply.

PowCon was bought by ITW (Miller/Hobart et. al. parent company) in the mid 90's for its inverter technology. Service parts can still be bought from Arc Products: http://www.arc-products.com/powcon/ and Arcon still offers a slightly modernized version of the Starcut: http://www.arconweld.com/index.html

The Starcut runs off of a DC CC welding power source and they can be picky about needing good connections.
