I have a YJ that I'm moving the rear axle back 4-5 inches. (HP60)
I will be running an NP 435 transmission (Ford version)
I'm giving thaught to running an NP 205/203 doubler. (Ford)
How long will this set up be?
Will it work, or do I still just not have enough wheelbase?
Yeah I know, just get an Atlas. (Just not in the cards right now)
Thanks
You may need to move the rear back more like 7" for the doubler to fit. WMS's doubler kit is the same lenth as a 203, its about the shortest kit out there, I'm running it in mine and wouldn't trade it for an atlas, I've got the best of both world super stout with gearing for all occations. and if any body gives you too much sh.... put an atlas behind your 203! I also run my 203 upside down with the 205 clocked flat. Any way call Casey @ WMS he can give you all of the low down.www.wagonermachine.com
i put one in an early bronco. we reset the wheelbase at 110" and set it on leafs front and rear. 60's front and rear .np 435 203/205. call steve @ 602-944-2411 for more details
G man,
I run the 203/205 "Doubler" (Offroad Design) in my fullsize Bronco, 106" wheelbase and I have about 2.5 feet of rear driveshaft with a Dana 70 rear. The overall length of the setup is like 18.5" IIRC. It was about 1" shorter that the complete 203!
I have the WMS 3.0:1 low gearset in the 203 and I love this setup. (1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 6:1 and if I start out in second gear the numbers equal a 4:1) Like Yeller said you have more gear choices with this setup. :flipoff2:
I agree, talk to Casey at WMS. Awesome group of guys there in OK!
The overall length of the Doubler™ is now 21.5" for all versions. This is measured from the front face of the 203 to the rear yoke centerline on the 205. This is the same length as the original 203, and only 6" longer than original GM 205 applications. It's 9" longer than a 205 for the Ford guys. The new compact length allows the Gen2 Doubler™ to fit in many more applications while still leaving adequate rear driveshaft length. Keep in mind these measurements are not absolute, they can vary as much as 1/2" either way depending on the case length variations and yoke length. This does not include the adapter between the transmission and NP203.
That doubler with the low 203 gearset has to ROCK!
My wheelbase will be about 105"
The rear drop is my concern.
The stock AX-5 and 231/slipyoke is about 3 ft. long.
My 435 is shorter but the output shaft is like 9 inches long.
Is there a coupler between the tranny and T/C? How long?
I just measured mine (new alum Gen II) from the front face of the 203 to the rear yoke centerline on the 205 and it was 21" even. Sould have it in next week, gawd I'm fricken slow. http://coloradok5.com/orddoubler/doubonbench.jpg
The trick is to use either the Wild Horse's doubler kit of make your own, like Chris Waterman did. The trick here is to cut and respline the very long 435 mainshaft so that the adapter between the 435 is about 1.5 inches long instead of 6.5 inches long - in effect the 203 doubler part replaces the 6.5 inch adapter normally used between 435 and an early bronco dana 20.
When I did mine, my overall drivetrain length, compared to stock ax15 and 231 with SYE, was LESS by 2 inches - I had to get a LONGER driveshaft.
The only real difference here is that the kit is made for a bronco dana 20, but many people make the 203/205 adapter. So what I guess I'm suggesting is the 435/203 adapter and shaft from the wild horse's kit, then the 203/205 adapter from someone like ORD. Due to the differences in length between an end20 and a 205, you are going to end up longer than me, but still pretty close to stock drivetrain length.
Thanks for suming it up guys.
Actually today at work I was thinking I should be able to cut and respline the tailshaft and lose some length that way.
So I need a Ford 203?
I have a CJ-7 with an ORD 203/205 behind a Chevy 350/350 with stock rear end location. I run a 9" Ford and had to go to a high pinion center section to make it work but I love it. Driveshaft is approx. 16".
If you get that tranny output under control then it will be no problem. The genII doubler is not much different that the old slipyoke 231 and with the extra 5" you added you will be good to go.
