Remote reservoir with stock TC pump
I 'm running a stock TC pump on a 94 Jeep 4.0 and making the jump to full hydro. Because of space issues, my orbital is mounted on the framerail very close to the motor. There is not enough room to run the TC pump with its attached reservoir. Has anyone tapped out the return port on a stock TC pump to be able to run a remote reservoir? The one I have just has the rubber o-ring seal where the reservoir clamps in place.
Aside from buying a hopped up pump, which I'm not so sure is the most reliable option judging by all the failures I've seen, what are my options here? I am not trying to get out of spending money, just want a very reliable setup, and I like using stock parts when possible because parts store availability is always a plus. I would like to be able to use the stock pump with a Howe or POS reservoir. |

Huh? There is a plastic container clamped to it that holds the fluid. This is just a factory Jeep p/s pump like those found on YJs, TJs, XJs, etc. I was under the impression it was a TC pump. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Exactly what does TC stand for? It sounds like you are trying to describe a Power Steering Pump. ONly TC pump I'm aware of is inside an automatic transmission.

A 'stock" TC pump has no reservoir. GM made them for years and put them in tons of things. The XJ bastard version has a plastic can transplanted on it. I don't know if you can adapt a stock XJ pump, but a regular TC one works fine...
Same bolt pattern etc. I got mine from PSC, but there are plenty of stock applications you can use to get one from an auto parts store. A 4-cylinder YJ has a pump w/remote reservoir:

To answer your question, yes you can tap it for a feed line, just like PSC does. But be carefull, there is very little meat there for tapping.
The stock remotes, and feed lines off 4 banger YJ's and TJ's are both pretty small, and really wouldnt get you any farther ahead. The 1/4" feed line in the plastic resevoir on your attached style definately results in starvation when you try to hot rod the pump. Maybe grab a wrecker one and try tapping it first for some practice. |
