I guess I should clarify the plan for trianulating the roof, the nodes where the B pillar X attach are not yet significant nodes, but they will be. There is also roof bracing and an A in the windshield to be added. This is a build thread, not a showcase of a finished car. I love that the car doesn't even have a front end yet and the "experts" are already jumping on the "needs more triangulation" wagon.
![]() Thanks everyone for the kind words, it will be a damn cool car (and plenty strong), WHEN IT'S DONE!!!

Dan, it was great to finally meet you. And I also think you very much for the ride saturday night.
Anyway, back to the build... This thing is just down right sexy in person and I cant wait to see it finished at the hammers. So long as I can make it out there anyway. If not, then we're hittin up something when you get back... hopefully andrew wont run out of gas this time.

So why do you have a foward leaning X brace?? Why are you bracing the B hoop to a section of the chassis that has very little sideways strength. Why dont you brace the B hoop conventionally to the tube work directly behind the seats where you have massive lateral strenght. Sam

I was trying to be facetious more than anything. But this type of thing is a prime example of why you hardly see a build thread on Pirate anymore. So many cool rigs get built and never seen on " the worlds biggest dickhead off road forum".
I guess it's OK in the big picture, most the cock gobblers on here wheel about twice a year anyway.

I don't think anyone puts up build threads expecting to be coddled and usually if someone puts up a thread here they have the balls to support their actions. It is a shame that some people have to ask their questions like they know everything, but some people are just not cerebral enough to phrase their thoughts any other way...

Bracing it in another plane also makes a HUGE increase in torsional rigidity. Think about a cube, framed out of only tube. There is not much strength in it, being rectangulated (yes I made this word up). Add a couple diagonal braces in plane with any of the sides, and there is still really no increase in torsional strength. But add a single brace from one corner to the opposite (out of plane with all of the sides) and the increase in rigidity is huge. Sorry if I came off as a dick earlier, it was not my intent to bring anyone down, I just get defensive about my work sometimes. ![]() -redd |

Sam, I did not take your comments the wrong way. I know we are building and the things we have to work around. All of the factors in a build like this can never been seen through pics. I understand that fact therefore I do not get worked up about it.
In the rear where the X lands will change a lot in the coming week. I think you will find there will be more than enough to support the X in its current location. The fabricated frame rails will also come up and tie into the X. We will also be adding more tube in that location. Sit back and I think it will all come together just fine. I have been building, breaking, designing, cutting apart, and dreaming about building rigs for many years. I do not hold all the answers for building a KOH car. I dont think no one out there does. There are experts that can build fast desert racers and people there that can build great rock crawlers. I think it will take a few years of building and rebuilding to start to understand what it takes to make a KOH style race car. I know a lot of people have a pretty good idea right now, but you watch what happens over the next few years if this current trend continues. I think you will start to see some very innovative things popping up in our industry. We may even see more cross over companies from the desert racing sector start to offer up entries for KOH. If you have questions for me about the build. You can post or you can send a PM if you want. I will do my best to answer your questions. Like I said in the beginning there may be some things I will not answer. That is part of racing though. Dan

Hell yea man, I had a blast. It was really good to hang with you again just like old times. I forgot how long it had been really. I gotta say, it's awesome to see how far BTF has come. Now that you're in b-hizzle I definitely see more trips in my future, the drive was cake. Those ideas you threw out on the XXX ride got me fired up too, definitely looking forward to that.

well that is getting a little off topic from the car, but yeah that is some funny stuff. I wish I could claim that one as my own creation but I do have to say my buddy Pops is one funny dude. If you ever make it to So Cal you need to hang with him for a while. He will have you rollin on the floor. Dan

Hey Dan, Jason, James, Jay, redd (he never capitalizes the R) and Shilo...
I miss you guys already. Thanks for having me out there this weekend! I'm looking forward to seeing you guys again in January, if not sooner. After learning a little bit about tig welding from Troy Johnson and Dan Moore of Fab School this weekend, I have a new appreciation for the fine welding and quality craftsmanship that's gone into the car so far. You all are amazing at what you do! Keep up the good work as we are all taking notice ![]() And thanks for making safety a priority... that chassis will be extremely strong by the time its ready to go fast. |
