NP231J vs. NP231C

anyone know if the cases are the same? I am looking into swapping in a chevy drivetrain into the TJ but I am gonna keep the 231. I was told that you can swap a np231C front casing and it will fit up to a TH350 (shaft wise)

I think you need to swap the input from the Chevy to the Jeep.Jeep 6cyl is 23 spline 4cyl 21 spline.I think Chevy is 26 or plus spline.Look into as Im not totally sure.

You will need the entire 231c. You CAN reuse your slip yoke eliminator kit from your 231j to save some money though.

The differance between the C case and the J case are the mounting bolts. The J has 6-bolts the C has 5-bolts. The C case should have a 6-gear planitary. The case halves are swappable. But if your using a chevy motor just stick with the C case. The slip yoke eliminators will work with both.

well I already have a NP231J with the 4:1 teralow kit and a SYE. can I just transfer the "guts" to the 231c case? Also, what transmissions will the 231c mate with, without using an adapter?

Then you just need to change the front case half onto the np231J You will need an adapter to mount it to any trans. the adapter is differant depending on what trans you use. The output shaft might be a differant length depending on the trans. What did the chevy case come off of? I run a 700r4 attached to a np231c with a stock adapter.

I dont have a chevy case. I have a 231J case. and a SBC. I am just looking for the best way to run the SBC and the 231. I would like to run a 700r4. Will that trans bolt up to a 231c?

Yes pick up a trans and t/c from a 87-91 s10-s15 blazer with a 4.3 in it. The 4-cylinder version of the 700r4 will not bolt up to a SBC The later model s10-s15 blazers used a electronic shift np233c T/C

NO.

The 4:1 kit uses a different ring gear for the planetary which isn't a 'serviceable' item on the 231 cases. It's a shrink fit into the aluminum housing and it's not removable without messing it up. You're kinda SOL on that one. You also won't be able to use the 6-pinion planetary carrier with it as the gears will be different.
