How strong are chromoly 30 spline dana 60 axles

So i managed to break both of my outer dana 60 axles this weekend playing in the tank trap in my freinds yard.

I snapped and twisted them like laffy taffy.

anyways i found some chromoly 30 spline axles for 130 bucks new. how much stronger are these than stock

i would get 35 spline but i cant really afford the chromoly 35's and hubs yet for i figured i would rock these unitl they break and then save more money to upgrade

some thoughts would be nice

I was so suprised i broke them both in a 2 minute period

What is the application for those slugs you have, if they are junk yard parts? They look like a good option until I can upgrade to 35 spline.

Stock D60 shafts are not made with good (modern) metallurgy and have a weak point similar to stock Rockwell shafts, they're old, abused and 50's-80's metallurgy does not compare to recent stuff.

The break in the picture is pretty typical, here's my 30 spline D60 front breakage, 37's on a 4000 lb buggy.

Old stock shafts will have a considerably lower strength than new ones, both due to better manufacturing and because older shafts fatigue.

As far as comparing 4340 1.31" 30 spline D60 outer shafts to stock 35 spline stuff, I can practically guarantee that the stock 35 spline stuff will be stronger. The diameter of the shaft has more to do with the torsional strength of the shaft than anything (the torsional strength is linear except for the moment of inertia which raises the diameter of the member to the fourth power).

Bigger shafts make a much bigger difference but sometimes chromoly shafts will get ya through.

A stock 35 spline shaft is much stronger than a chromo 30 spline stub.

If you wanna run 30 splines, you can always upgrade to a D30 with the super 30s.

In other words. Don't polish a turd. 30 spline axles are for mall crawlers. You wanna wheel and you already got a 60, then get some 35 splined alloys, and upgrade the hubs and locker side gears.

The side gears are already 35 genius. Get some new flanges and rock the 35 outers.

Save your money for the long run. Get some stockers to slap in there for now, then get some 35-splines and hubs (if you must). Just go with slugs.

really you're gunna spend $300 for 30 splines when you could just spend $400 for 35 splines, lockouts, new joints? this is an easy choice.

for 130.00 dollars i would run them, hell i would run the shit out of them and see if i can get them to break. they are probally ( i use this term loosely ) just as strong as the STOCK dana 70 35 spline stubs.

seeing as you all ready have the stock 30 spline stock flange's its only going to cost a 130.00 to run them. do it and post back IF they break.

jason.
