Question Welding 14 bolt

Getting ready to weld up a 14 bolt and looking for some advice. I have read a few articles on here about it. Any good, better and best ways to do it?

Thanks

He's talking about welding the spider gears to "Lock" the Chevy 14 bolt rear end.
I have not welded my 14 bolt but have seen several diffs welded up. Need to get really heavy beads in the contact area of the gears where the teeth mush together.
I'd like to see some picks when your done. I'm still in the debate stage between welding the diff and getting a detroit.

Thanks for the reply! I am undecided on weld or spool. Due to $ I am getting closer to weld. I have read some stuff about the amount of stress it puts on the spiders if you just weld the gear valley. I will do pics when I decide what to do.

I like this one! Man I searched and could not come up with one specific to a 14 bolt! I hate it when people ask a question on a forum without searching first.

Quick Update:
I still don't have any pictures, but when I got it apart it has the gov loc system (only three spider gears). Not real happy about that, but I guess it will be as good as any since I will be welding it.

Get the Detroit. The most inexpensive Detroit for an axle too, I might add.

Especially if its DD, youll thank yourself later.

For a trail rig.I like to just weld it up.For street rig a detroit can be better for tire wear.

definitly go with the locker. once again, you
will regret it if your street drivin if you just weld up
the spidey gears.

if your going to weld a gov lock make sure you turn out the actual hex locking system so it is spread as if the gov lock was engaged. it will tighten up the spider gears and make it a bit stronger. i made the mistake of not doing that when i welded my first one and it blew easily!.

???

I know this thread is a few years old but I have a question. When welding up the 14 bolt why concern yourself with saving the carrier? They are a dime a dozen. Why not just weld the spiders to the carrier through the ports in the carrier instead of tearing it all apart?

Because that isn't very much weld surface. Might work if you drive like a pussy and were going to run 31" tires.

If you trust it then that's all that matters right?

yup

Thats a good point. Peace of mind is priceless. However, his theory here does make sense if you think about how the spider gears work in relation to the carrier. Filling the areas between the spiders and then continuing onto the carrier would share the loading stress between the carrier and the spiders instead of leaving all that up to spiders alone. Make sense to you?

The reason I only welded up the spiders only was so I could put a detroit in later if wanted without have to buy another carrier. Why spend cash if you don't need to.

I welded up the spiders and welded them to the case and broke them with 4d's and a jeep 2.5. Had to buy a new install kit because the broken welds filled my diff up with metal and ruined the bearings.

This time around I'm putting in a grizzly locker and hopefully I'll be done messing with my 14b for a long while!
