offset diff?? which way to offset

Is there a preferred direction to off set a diff. Lets say the left front wheel lifts with torque when going up a sloop under a heavy load. Would you want to off set the diff to the side that lifts, or to the opposite side. Example would be: There would be a short axle on the left and a long axle on the right if the diff was offset to the left side. I just can't figure it out. Thanks in advance.

For the most part, we just offset the diff to the side our transfer case is on. If you're buying an Atlas or Stak and trying to decide which side, then it seems to come down to what you're used to.

It seems to me that drivers drop would be easier. You would have a better chance of seeing if it was going to clear or not from the drivers seat.

My stock CJ-5 has both diffs on the passenger side, nice because if you miss it with the front, then the rear clears....

Having both offset the same is nice that way, but unless you're willing to either stay with the dana 18 or put up with some pretty good driveline angles, there's not many t-case options.

profab and scs make some shiny units that seem to stand up to 1500hp monster trucks just fine . . .

Nice first post.

If a corner lifts under load, something is wrong.
Try changing the muffler bearing, that should help.

You guys are slackin.

you never said what drive train or axles you are useing.

there are lots of options and lots of ways to acheive offsets to both sides.

d18 being about the worst possible way to do it.

fwiw, i can not think of a single vehicle that had the rear offset to the drivers side.

Put your front to the driver side, It will put youe shifters colser to you. Also you can offset your motor to the pass side to have more drive shaft/leg room.

On the front you generally wont have much choice. If this is a full frame, I'd be most concerned about keeping the drive shaft out of the transmision.

After converting my TJ to 1 tons/40s and pass drop front, I am forced to run a super skinny front driveshaft and minimal uptravel w/ about 4" of lift to clear the bellhousing starter area...

I've found that there aren't too many engine/trans/t-case combos(worth swapping in) that will give a ton of room on the passenger side if you want to keep a low ride height.

H'mmm, I guess us competitors are smoking crack then because this is a consideration, as is the relationship to the links as well as the gear ratio and whether it has reduction in the hubs, and what is the rotation of the driveshaft.

Methinks you bashed too soon!

To the OP, if you're not competing at the highest levels, don't overthink it...it's a major tweaking thing that gives SOME results, but yes, you are right, it DOES make a difference, especially when climbing.

The RockHer2 has both diffs offset to the drivers side. I know there are others, I just cant think of them. I can think of a lot of cars with both diffs offset to the same side, just cant remember which side they are offset to.

Can you elaborate. I am curious to hear your thoughts as to how this affects the vehicle's dynamics.

I am having troubles seeing the differences in the leverage forces with the dif on either side.
