Awhile back, skeetshooter and I were setting up the gears in my scout. The rear was no problem using the old carrier (after a little welding of course). The front 60 was a little different story since I had a new detroit to put in.
Well, you know, we are just a couple of east Texas farm boys who have never really had the privilege to work on anything new so we determined that we should start out with the same amount of shims that was on the stock carrier.
So after we 'pressed' the bearings onto the detroit with a big ass socket and a ball peen hammer we then proceeded to install it in the housing.
It only took us two brain surgeons about 15 minutes to beat that son of bitch into the housing with the aid of a wooden block and a fawkin circus hammer.
Our spirits were crushed when we found that it was too tight. Who would of thought
By this time it was about 3 am and I had to be at work at 7 so I left and drove the hour home.
The next day we devised a most devious plan.
First secure the rig with a warn 8274 mounted to the shop floor.
The next step requires two people: you must simultaneously work both winch controllers until the rig is stabilized, otherwise you will jerk it off of the jack stands.
When you reach the desired tension, your buddy can control the apparatus (skeetshooter) and you (me) can sit there like Johnny Bench trying to keep your new Detroit and 6.17 gears from hitting the floor.
After that you just take a good guess at the number of shims you should pull out, spend 5 hours building a bearing puller, then using a hammer and chisel anyway, put the carrier back in, don't check shit and call it done:flipoff2:
If everything was done correctly you should end up with something like this. Only things required are dana 60's, detroit locker, The Apparatus, and several 30 packs of Budweiser:flipoff2:
i was consulting my confederate 4x4 guide and i thing all procedures were done correctly...except you should have had to pull the carrier bearings like 5 more time to ensure you get Good at it :flipoff2:
nice work...never doubt what 2 ******** and a 30 pack can accomplish!
*sigh* and here I sit thinking honed out carrier bearings are a good thing?
Oh well. Keep in mind if you don't have any backlash, it's the same as a Denver 4WPW install!
so with all that flat land around there why do you need a furbyfur anyway?

I did notice on the back of the apparatis truck window that you dudes are Hooked on Quack.....That could be the problem!!!Quack, beer, and booty fabbin don't mix!:skull:
All those fab skills and apparatus, and no one took 20 minutes to make a case spreader out of 3 pieces 1/2 x 2 flat bar, some 3/4 threaded rod and nuts, and two small pieces of 3/4 pipe to hold the threaed rod (all pivot points 3/4 x 1-1/2 bolts) ?
Booty Fab lives
seriously though, if anyone wants to see a pic of the one I made, I'd be happy to email you one. it is adjustable for 44s and 60s, and cost like $20 to make using all new steel and hardware from the local lowe's (didn't have time to scrounge at work for the free stuff)

'round these parts we don't use dem fancy schmancy jackstand thinger-ma-bobs, we all jus chain da axemal to a couple er big damn logs, so's we can skid it 'round the yard in two-by drive, if'n ya mount da logs to da knuckles and hook yer z-bar drag link to da log you can even steer kinda, dat way wez just gotta chain da carrier to a pole, da trailer house, er momma's leg and throw dat fur-by-fur inta da backwards gear, one er two good jerks and dat carrier pops right out. Werks good to chain it to momma's leg cuz then she can catch the gear thing and keep it nice an' clean and out of da cow shit.
That's a mighty fine picture of yer girlfirend on the grille of yer fur-by-fur, she gotta sista?

We had a case spreader, but that motherfawker was stuck! Besides, we already had "The Apparatus" just sitting there not being used.
