Minimum wage suckage
We were doing some yard work this weekend, had a mini-ex to prep for a driveway extension at the neighbors then tear out a massive amount of blackberries.
The driveway extension was entertaining. He had some guys that owed his kid some back rent, I guess it's a sizeable amount. They haven't been able to pay it so they were given the option to work it out, which they took. 5-7 yards of clumpy root infested dirt in 2'x2'x2' cubes were loaded in to a pickup truck and deposited out in the back of his property. I felt sorry for the guys unloading it and you could tell that each new truckload was even more demoralizing than the last. In between truck loads they were hand digging a ditch. I wasn't doing much to help them, I had 10-12 hours of machine work I was condensing in to under 8 as much as possible. Even felt kinda bad about the truckloads I was sending their way. I'll give them credit though, while they didn't return the Sunday phone call until after the football game was over. Saturday, they diligently worked their asses off never really slacking off or complaining for what amounted to $10/hr each in pay back. They took a little prod on Sunday, but they'll be back this week to continue the work. I wonder my neighbor will lend them to me.

Well, $8.67 in WA state, but it's close enough.

Maybe I'll ask the neighbor about my side of the yard later this week. He seems really happy with how much I got done in the back and then hauled out (20-25 yards of vines weighing around 4 tons, most of it his, with another 8 yards and growing on the trailer). I was happy just using the machine for an hour on my side, maybe he'd be willing to lend me his labor for the finish work.

Mrs DWT was scanning CL and found a posting for the castle. (chain of "adult" stores). She joked that she was overqualified for the management opening so I told her to give it a go. She applied at 11 pm Thursday and by 10 am Friday they called for her to interview Saturday am.

Or Maryland!
I'm sure Jersey is right up there on the "ridiculous state income tax rate" scale. IIRC Maryland's is still just 3-4%, they just don't allow shit for deductions. Not sure, but I'd guess FICA and not much else to the feds, or at least get most of it back. |

Really? I was reading a couple-month-old issue of Baltimore magazine a while back, they featured two different rowhouses in the city that sold for ~$350k, and said the property tax bill was well over $10k a year, I want to say $15k or $18k? I stop calling it property tax when it's what you'd pay on a 30-year mortgage. You're just renting your property from the gubmint at that point.
Is it seriously even worse up there? I know the insurance is, but damn, look at your drivers. And also, stop exporting them down here.

I know lots of people who pay $10K-$15K a year on property tax. People are fleeing this state in huge numbers because of it
