My new fascination. vacuum tube tech

I am getting drawn into the old school tech of tube stuff. amps mainly. There are tons of books from the 40s/50s on eBay. is there one or two "bibles" of tube stuff? It is amazing how fender and Marshall can get such opposite sounds from some hot glass.

What are you looking to do exactly? Fix/repair amps, or build one from scratch?

You mentioned Marshall vs. Fender and their different sounds. Actually the early Marshalls were copies of the Fender Bassman. The sound differences were mainly due to the output tubes that were available in England vs. the U.S.

As you'll get into it, there are only may be 4 or 5 basic amp architectures that people have tweaked over the years.

The original designs for Fender amps were just generic RCA designs for that that they gave out for free as circuits their tubes could be used in.

I don't know of any "bibles" but there is a shitload of information out there. Like I said before, if you want to just fix them or build an existing design, there is plenty of info on the web. If you want to get deeper into how to tweak them, there are a couple of books that go into that. However, most of the builder guys keep those types of secrets close to their chest because they either do mods or build "boutique" amps as their business.

You can PM me for more info, if you like.

Jake

I think these nixie tube clocks are pretty damn cool. The kits are easy enough to put together just about anybody that can solder can do it.

I have an old book called "Basic Audio" from the 50's, it covers basic amp design engineering.

Funny how long a tube style machine can last. Most new stuff gets hucked in the trash if it gets a little outta tune....

If you want a project, you could always build yourself a WW2 era pc. You might need a few thousand more tubes though.

Just noticed this in my local CL.. A bit of a drive for you. no clue if its worth the price.

http://carbondale.craigslist.org/ele/2789646629.html

We have a antique Tube Tester. We think it still works. And, we think it still has the roll paper of the settings of the tubes. Asking $100.00 OBO. Being sold as is. Can email me or can call (618) Five 96-2090. Please no real early morning calls. No Spammers. Thank You
