guy i work with runs a mod lite. Basically looks like a fullsize modified dirt car but half the size and use japanese motorcycle engine/trannys. They have a arm fronts and linked rears. You can find complete race ready ones for a couple $k, so maybe find an older roller for alot less.

I'm still sticking with basically a small formula 1 car, but with a solid rear axle for simplicity. AWD/4WS would be awesome, no doubt, but the necessary items would create too much parasitic drag on your thumper, not to mention the added weight.

I'm going with foot brakes, seperate too, foot throttle, hand clutch on the shifter. Small battery and fuel cell in the front, equal length control arms with steering linkage to match the pivot points of the control arms. That should take care of the really twitchy steering. If it was a small rack and pinion that'd be ever better. A little negative camber and negative caster so it'd "lay down and bite" when you start to push the front end.

You could probably get the entire front suspension from someone who's wrecked or raced a quad. Pick something current like a Honda 450... I'd bet there's piles on piles of stuff. You could even get fancy and go with cantilevered front shocks. Adding a sway bar would help with the weight balance and shit-nukka-damn cornering.

I'd say if you shipped me the engine and trans, I might be able to do it for under a grand, but that's also using a lot of stuff from my shop as far as raw materials go. I'm still stuck on TT tires from quads. They seem pencil eraser soft and most of the guys I knew that ran TT only ran a race or two on them. I think you'd have to have a harness, a roll bar and a good helmet to find how many g's it'd pull, but decently wide, low(ish), and really grippy tires?

That's too much fun to be had!

I've wanted to build one of these for a while, but with a 1000cc engine out of a sport bike. I want to actually make it street legal though and drive it to work during the summer. Make the drive to work WAY more fun...

Small roll cage, harness, lights, good brakes...what else would you need to tag one? Now I gotta find the regs in florida. Damnit.

On the other hand it would be fun to have a go cart with an R1 engine and some Low pro 15's on each corner to go mess with the local Leo's with. Imagine trying to catch something like that.
Like this?

R1 motor
Tube chassis
A-arm front/rack and pinion steering
Linked solid axle rear
13" rims
Apx 700lbs without a driver

It's not mine but I did all of the suspension, steering, front tube work, pedals, and some other random stuff

Took it up to Willow Springs last week and it was a ton of fun. Gearing is a little off so it only goes around 100mph, but it gets there real quick.

There is a video of one I was watching that the made an F1 paddle shifter attached to the steering wheel that shifted it correctly up and down on the bike trans. As for the clutch I only use the clutch on my bike when stopping and first taking off. Not sure if it works as easy in a Harley Leakerson unit.

I would do the f1 shifter set up and the clutch as a pedal on the floor with the throttle and brake.

Why not adapt like dirt bike handle bars to the kart? Clutch brake and throttle. I had a chopper with a suicide shifter and hated it. Taking my hands off the wheel at speed never feels safe

Fuck. That. Rig up an axle of some sort for 4 wheels. 3 wheels looks retarded.

You might find a servicar or trike axle for cheap. I'd like to see that motor all polished and in a Manx body covered in metal flake. Oh, and you have to run a sidedraft weber on it.

Maybe if you graft it to a veedub transaxle?

It would look kinda neat with a transverse vtwin in it, but it would be pretty slow.
