What would you do (DD tech)
So, the wife's Tahoe crapped out about 7 months ago. I parked it, and bought her an Excursion as I did not have the time to mess with it.
Fast forward to today. I pulled the head, and found that it had dropped a valve. The valve pierced the piston, bent 2 rods, and gouged up the head. The cylinder wall is fine though. Here is my conundrum: Should I sell as-is, or fix and get more money/use out of it? I don't really have the time to tear it down and put it back together. The KBB is about $8k (2002 LS) and I was thinking about putting it up for $4k needs motor. I can probably drop the pan, change the piston, and do a junkyard head for under $500, or get a junkyard longblock for a couple hundred more. It all comes down to time though. I don't owe anything on it, the interior is still nice (as is the body), but I am working on a gravel driveway, and need to get it done quick. What would you do? Oh, and Happy Zombie Day!

If that were mine I'd pull the engine and swap in a LQ9 or LQ4 depending on what I can find. Then I'd rock it for a couple more 100K.
My .02 cents. I am cheap and it sounds like a good core to me. You couldn't pick up a cheap DD for 1,200 (which is what you can get a LQ9 for and freshen it up). |

Send it to Texas. Camerogeeenyus has great plans to remedy these situations.

Not a matter of being worth my time, just a matter of having time to do it.

I'd probably find a complete motor, either junkyard, Craigslist, whatever, and swap the whole thing out. Drive it or sell it after that. It's way easier to sell a running vehicle than a blown up one. You said it yourself that it's worth 8k running, 4k blown up. Motor should be under a grand. That's at least 2k in your pocket, maybe 3 if you find the right buyer.

Don't you have teenagers rapidly approaching driverdom? Fix it, let them drive it, and use it as a tool to hang over their heads if they misbehave.
OH! and those should be sodium filled valves, so if the valve is in more than one pieces, toss it into a bucket of water for entertainment.

With the amount of time you waste with lowballing craigslisters offering you $1500 you could swap a junkyard motor in it and have sold it for $7-8k. |

I am still on the fence. $3k more would be nice, but my work schedule is quickly filling up, and I have to get the boat in the water too. The female child is going to get something else to drive. I still have a couple months on that.

![]() I'd do the swap no questions asked.....and I have zero projects incomplete. BTW sodium filled is only on Z06 in that vintage LSx engine. Last edited by montecarlo31; 04-08-2012 at 03:08 PM. |

I am a Yota guy, so I lack some of the special tools (fuel line releases, etc.) but I could do the work if time were no object. It really all boils down to aggravation factor at this point. The extra money would be nice, but is not necessary. Thanks for the input. I still have no idea what I am going to do
