Moving to Australia?
So I found a potential opportunity to relocate to Australia for work. Apparently mining work up here is oversaturated, so I'm seeing myself having to go into full-on job searching in a year or two if something else doesn't come up before then. I've found a position in Perth(Kalgoorlie, actually) that, with exchange rates and cost of living adjustments, puts me about equal to my current lifestyle up here. The listing says full relocation paid for, but I'm wondering if that's typical for just me, or my whole family. I'd have to sell my house which I've only had for two years, and my two Jeeps then get transportation down undah.
My biggest concern is all the poisonous creepy-crawlies and my kids. Another is potentially losing my ass moving way down there on a whim. I guess I could supplement my income by not selling the house, but renting it out, but being way down there I can't perform repairs or ensure the house is being taken care of, I'd have to get someone to manage the property for me. I'd rather just sell it and eliminate the trouble. Looking up cost of living down in Perth, the median price for a house is 450k AUS, and homes around that price are pretty fawking nice so I can probably go for less. The job pays around $130k AUS, and currently I'm making 50k USD in a 150k house, so it'll come out to about the same. Cost of living seems to be dead-even right now. I'm getting excited about it already, and I only just now applied, and the listing closes in two months. I'm going to be putting in for passports regardless. |

I can tell you that Perth is one of the nicest places on earth I know
But you do know that Kalgoorlie is about 350mls in the bush from Perth, do you ? 350mls on the Great Eastern Hwy set you back up about 6-7 hrs.Kalgoorlie is a little town of ~35k people in the middle of the bush, think of death valley as a spa compared to the area. But wheeling is great there, and necessary if you want to leave town other than westbound to the coast.

If you go for it and want any advice, I have family in Perth so may be able to help.
Having said that, as Patrol said, Kalgoorlie is in the the middle of fuck knows where, hundreds of miles from Perth. At least sharks and crocodiles won't be a problem. ![]() Lots of pubs though.

Some of my family is from W.A. and my uncle was driving live stock in his road train through W.A. for 25 yrs. They lived in Kalgoorlie for years and eventually moved to Perth.

I expected all of this.
![]() Yeah I know it's out in the middle of nowhere, but I already drive 100 miles to work one-way, and it's no big deal driving a few hundred more to get anywhere. The town I'm seeing is pretty self-sufficient. I see there's a road straight south to the coast that's around 100-150 miles as well so that'll be a better trip if I need to see some water. It'd be nice to be able to bike to work but still afford to go wheeling whenever I want. I'm fine with dry, if it doesn't mean it's all frozen. I already live in an arid climate so it's no different. I'm kinda stoked about the potential of it never really getting below freezing. I'm tired of snow, to be honest, and I'd like the ability to keep my entire living quarters open and aired out rather than having to seal it all up for half the year. I've already worked out taxes and such, and it'll still give me a lot more disposable income than now even after living expenses. My current income that I mentioned before is net. It's more like 62k gross, working 9 months out of 12, and that's also due to me being at one of the lower paying exploration firms in the area. The tradeoff has been that it's a great company to work for, it's very casual, and I've had a lot of paid downtime lately. But I'm ready to step up. One of my favorite bands is out of Perth, too...so that kinda sealed the deal for me. Now I'm hoping they're willing to relocate a family of 5.

Unsure...the listing closes two months from now, which gives me plenty of time to get passports for the fam made up, and I'm guessing they'll give me a little leeway for packing and getting the shipping of stuff set up. I need to figure out if they pay up-front relocation costs or if they'll reimburse...if the latter then I probably won't be able to do it.
