Did you check the starter?

Seriously, my bet is a tensioner pulley bearing. My '97 Cherokee does the same thing, even after changing the water pump. My son drives it now, not me, so I I let him deal with it - he usually just turns up the radio.

This. Most other things don't make noise randomly. The distributor bushing will make noise at random and sound very much like an alternator bearing, or idler bearing going bad.

Time for a V8 swap.

May as well throw on some tons while you're at it. More practical that way.

This.
Come awn, it's a jeep. If I stopped to track down every funky noise mine made I'd never drive the damned thing.

When the "whatever it is" finally seizes or breaks, then you'll know what it is.

Just don't ever drive it, then there will be no chance of it squealing.

Rolling or still make a difference?
Any change with RPM change?

Turn the radio up until it makes the noise consistently, then track it down if you are motivated. If you are not motivated, wait until it breaks for self diagnosis.

He hasn't messed with it yet. Being one handed right now is slowing him down a bit and we've had appts on base all this week. I think he's going to start with the manifold bolts like someone mentioned. After thinking about it, the noise is a bit more of a whistle than a squeal so that one might make sense.

If you can get it to make the noise in the driveway, spray around the intake with a squirt bottle of water, if the noise and/or idle changes you found it. you can also test "all spinning accesories" by removing the belt. If this does it at idle, then everything can be disconnected without too much issue but the waterpump for too long.

Vacuum leak was gonna be my suggestion...

So, we have this jeep that makes a noise

Throw our went on one of our jeeps and before it went it would randomly start squealing. Id say depending on how bad and often its doing it you might get another month of driving out of it. Might as well replace the clutch while your in there. Good luck, and good year to get btw.

Now compare to the AC compressor, then to the steering pump, then to the idler pulley (put the dowel on the bolt, but be careful damnit!)
This is the way to find it. Old school but it works. Listen to everything with a bearing, when you hear the bad one there will be no doubt.

As a owner of one jeep, maintainer of two, I can only say this.

If the noise isn't annoying, leave it. The second your jeep recognizes it's noise is gone a new one will start. So, once you fix it to the point the noise it makes doesn't bother you much, foster that noise, protect it like a newborn.

Throw out bearing is a possibility but it should at the very least change pitches/sounds when you press the pedal.

If it's more of a whistling noise when the engine isn't fully warmed up and it's a little cool out, let me know if you find it, mine has been making it for years now.

I put a few drops of marvel mystery oil on a squealing idler pulley and it stayed quite for a couple years, You can do that one handed.

Ok, previous owner put on this ghetto ass intake. When I mentioned vacuum leak to Robert he said he bets its that intake. We got home from Lowe's this evening and the jeep was still making the noise when we parked so he jumped out and checked the intake and that's where the noise is coming from. He's going to mess with it more tomorrow. Yay!!!
