DAKAR Race on SpeedVision
Did anyone see one of the Mogs run over a landmine tonite? Looks like the rear axle took most of the hit and the box was good. Those things are tough!

I saw that wheel off; it was something more than a MOG, IIRC.
I think this would qualify as the toughest kind of race, on or off-road. Sure, in other series you can roll or drown, but can you imagine the added tension and drama of rock-crawling or mud-bogging if there was a good chance of hitting a MINE (this year), or getting shot at by terrorists (last year)??? Has there been any Dakars when somebody hasn't died? BTW, any good sites with complete Dakar coverage? The Speed Channel coverage is really biased toward the bikes, the factory buggies and the big-trucks, with only an occassional glimpse of the SCORE-type pickups and homebuilt oddities. I also haven't seen any shots of the portal-axled Volvo wagon. |

Do they let the teams use GPS? I haven't seen any of the coverage but I hear teams are still getting lost.

According to the announcer, for some reason the GPS wasn't working in some of the stages.
I felt bad for the teams that had breakdowns that set them back on the schedule, so they were driving the desert stages at night. There is a father/son team riding the bikes who were kind of keeping close; the son fell off the bike, and the father ran him over. They showed the boy lying on his back waiting for the rescue, and boy, did he ever have a "THANKS, Dad!!!!" look on his face! |

On some stages they are not alowed to use the GPS some they are.
Didn't know one of them hit a land mine. Saw one of the big truck fold a front axle. They rolled another. Here is the official site http://www.dakar.com/
