Holy moly. The news just stated that guitarist of The Who was arrested for "possessing indecent images of children" on his computer!

He said he "has the images and info on children on his PC because he was researching child sexual abuse because he believes he was sexually abused as a child."

Doesn't sound TOO fishy, but then again he IS under arrest!

Thats right, a company like "Data Recovery" can 3,4,5times deleled files on a HDD reconstructed, not even fire will destroy the files. Only mechanical destroying of the surface is possible or a blast furnace.

On the other hand, that kind of work is extremely expensive, and you have to balance the lengths that the prosecution is willing to go in order to secure evidence.

In 99% of cases, simply deleting something is probably good enough.

OK... i see sorta. but how do these fuckers get busted then? taking it in to have it repaired? some snoopy guest finds it? a watchdog snare filter on a porn site? you'd think if it was being repaired the tech guy fixing it wouldnt go looking at all the guys photos and shit... but then again if i had a stars computer in my workshop you KNOW I'd be looking all in that mofo for stuff too i guess.

Could be any of those. Especially the watchdog filter. It would be like a sting. There may also be more to the story. He may have been a member of a club, or ring and they all got busted. Maybe he said something stupid and tipped them off. It also could have been as simple as something that came up ina traffic stop. If it it true, I'm sure we will find out later.

Edit: Could they have busted a site and traced the cookies?

I would hazard a guess that he had his IP addy show up on some red flagged sites, or part of a "sting" by the FBI or something to try and catch pervs by baiting them with certain types of porn?

EDIT site has gone into molassas mode for me....

this is getting too painful to bother post much anymore.

So they got caught and the news tells everyone. Unless there was a sting setup and they actually have evidence of HIM downloading it and of HIM viewing it they have nothing on him.

He could have sent his computer out for repair and this material was planted on it. Someone else in the household could have used the computer and downloaded it.

The only way to make it totally gone is to overwrite every piece of the disk. Wipedrive is Department of Defense 5220.22-M disk-sanitizing standard approved.

And so are a few others.
