Neighbor to our farm says they've found over 30 dead deer in our vicinity from the bad drought we had this past summer. Last weekend we went down to the farm for work weekend and driving through the fields we spooked up several deer and they seemed very alert and healthy so?!? |

Hunting general season this year as my hunt party didn't draw tags. Season starts on the 29th, but I won't be able to get out until the 3rd of October. I don't have much time to invest, so it will just be concentrated locally and try to get away from the masses. It should help that we'll be out on a Wednesday, but time will tell.

I went up to Ice House on opening day and Sunday. It was a fucking zoo up there. Would get into my spot about 20 minutes before sunrise and right at sunrise/right after I would have 4 hunters walk through where I was sitting. But that's opening weekend of Ice House for ya.. Only saw 2 does and 2 fawns..

Only this little gal so far...Parris Island held a deer reduction hunt last weekend, I drew a stand. The game officer wanted any mature deer taken; I obliged. 90lbs...the little ones usually tase better anyway.

Youth season is this weekend on SAT/SUN only and then Bow opens MON. Got some 1st timers coming out and we will get them in front of their first kill. Love introducing young hunters to a sport that they can participate in all of their life. We have a 2nd year guy coming out and his Dad told me he has been talking about this since school started.
He put a big Doe in the freezer last year and was very proud to share his Buck Sticks. Cool Stuff.

This was supposed to be my first season but getting screwed around a bit by work and can't take any holidays during the 2 week rifle season. I'm going to be going out to a buddies farm in the afternoon/evenings but if I don't have any luck he is going to lend me his spare bow.
Bow season starts Oct 1 here and rifle Nov 5 |

Bow season opened last weekend here. Went out two nights ago and took a nice little doe. There were three deer under my stand...a very young fawn with its very large mother. Wasn't going to take her but a third, smaller doe came up behind. Wasn't going to take her either and was messing around with them as it was getting dark. I was making noise, wasn't very still in my stand, etc. trying to see what it would take to spook these three. Quite a bit it seems. It was getting near dusk and I wanted to head in. For shits and giggles I drew my bow with no sense of trying to be stealth or quiet about it just to see if I could spook these three. They still didn't care much. I was drawn up on this third doe and about to bring it back to rest and go home when I figured, fuck it, that's why I'm here. Let it fly. Hit her a little back but took it through the liver and one lung. Went about 100 yards and laid down. Gotta love Rage broadheads.
Got 3 more archery tags and 6 gun tags left. Land owner opens November 1st and private land November 15th. Didn't even bother getting state land tags this year.

The deaths are more than likely Bluetongue disease. It has hit the midwest hard this year cause of the drought and stagnet water. we have had hundreds of confirmed cases in Missouri this year.
