What's it Worth to Keep an Unlimited Data Plan?

Carrier = Verizon

Immediate out of pocket cost is $600 to buy a phone and stay on a month to month plan which includes unlimited data.

If I go with a new plan and the same phone, it will cost $200 for the phone and $30 more per month to have a 2 year, 2gb data plan.

The obvious ROI is less than 14 months to break even.

I would suspect that the real ROI would be much less due to the fact that I would increase my data usage with the new phone.

WWPUD? (What Would Pirate Users Do?)

I suspect that unlimited data will never come back. Right? Wrong?

they want to charge you more per month for a lesser plan?

no brainer.

Better off buying a phone and keeping the unlimited plan .

You can always find a deal on a phone on Craigs list or ebay.

Yep. Amazing. The only negative is the $400 out of pocket up front.

I checked my current usage and I've been over the 2gb level 2 of the last 4 months.

$400 up front costs is covered by the $30/month extra, like you said, in short order.

drop your home internet service and use the phone as a hotspot.

maybe things are different up here, but I called into my carrier and it went like this

- I want X plan Y $$, I can stay with you, or goto another carrier who will give me X plan, Y $$.
- sorry, I can't do that, I don't even have that option to offer you
- who has that option?
- my supervisor
- put him on
- hello, X plan, Y$$ ???... ok then
- thanks

done

you are giving them money, they are charging 10x what it's worth... ask to speak to a supervisor, explain your options with another carrier, ask what they will do to keep you.

worst case, buy phone, keep unlimited.

Keep the unlimited and buy the phone out right. If you don't need to be to be at the bleeding edge of phones pick up a good used one on ebay. With 4g it's way to easy to burn data and for me 4 to 6 gig's is pretty much a normal month. The last time the power wen't out for a few days that was pushed closer to 20 gb's.

Also keep in mind if you have a 4g tablet or 4g mobile hot spot you can use your sim card in that device and use your unlimited data.

Just did the same thing. Verizon too. I bought a used Razor Maxx from a friend, only about 3 months old, for $250, keep the unlimited data plan. It's completely retarded they dumped the unlimited plan instead of grandfathering us in. If there ever comes a time where I can't keep my unlimited I'm probably jumping ship. I have only ever had Verizon but have no problem going somewhere else since they are screwing us.

This whole "share everything" data plan they are pushing now is junk. I have 1 phone. I have no reason to need to share data among many devices as they are advertising, I just want my unlimited data on 1 device... frustrating!

Look into buying a phone like the nexus 4 for 300 or 350 and getting a monthly no-contract unlimited plan.

I have had it(verizon unlimited) for a long time, but don't be fooled... even with the "unlimited" plan after about 5gb they slow you way down.. Still use all the data you want just a slower speed.. Ask me how I know.. I wish sprint was better in our area

Well how did I just do and upgrade to a new SG3 thinking I would lose my unlimited data plan and I did not. Paid 199 for the phone with a $30 dollar bullshit fee added on. Did this online and they shipped the phone to the house. I still have unlimited.

This has been my understanding......upgrades can still keep the unlim. just can't if you change plans.

we just upgraded my wifes phone to the i phone 5 and i took her old 4 and they wouldnt let us keep our unlimited data plan. i think were sharing 4gb and its actually cheaper than both of us paying the 30 a month for unlimited data as long as we dont go over. i think our data is 40 dollars a month.

New phone on a 2 year contract = line upgrade = new plan = no more unlimited. I was on chat 4 times asking different questions and the online shopping cart forced new plan options on any contract purchase.

Averaging about 2gb but that's on my Blackberry with pretty much just emails. I rarely use the browser.

Great thing about the grandfathered unlimited data plans, they upscale, so if you go 4g you get unlimited 4g. I use over 4gb a month of transfer (with teathering to my tablet and laptop) and get charged nothing extra.

The out of pocket upfront cost for new phones kinda sucks but *shrugs*

It seems to be a no brainer. Just making sure I wasn't missing anything.

I honestly didn't even realize I had the coveted unlimited; it's something that they forced on me when I got the BB.

What's the deal with buying an unlocked phone from a third party? Can it still be activated by Verizon?

Yes, but make sure that the IMEI number is clean, Not a stolen or phone that has been canceled for non payment. All you need to do when buying is to call Verizon and ask them to check the IMEI number especially when buying used.

When i buy used, I only buy phones that come with the original packaging, box, manuals, cords etc .

I was looking at a new phone from an Amazon dealer, shipped by Amazon so I figure it should be clean or returnable.
