Trading in a car to a dealer with a bad transmission...

And not telling them about it. What are the possible blowbacks? Can the dealer go after someone for a known issue that was not disclosed? Always wondered this. Discuss.

besides karma?

You sure as hell aren't likely to be fawking the dealership on the deal.

Well, firstly I wouldn't make the thread on the interweb about it.

Otherwise, read the agreement on the trade in/sale.

If there's no obvious signs that they detect before you hand it over, you're probably fine. Since after all, it was probably the 16yo kid they have in the detail shop that blew the tranny, right?

As long as you're not in commiforia and tell them "AS-IS". Most dealer will "test drive" the car prior trading in. Some will not even drive off the dealership lot, so if the first gear works, they may not even notice that it do not have any higher gears. Their loss for not inspecting close enough as was bought "AS-IS".

As is where is baby. You think they would take responsibility if you bought a used car from them and the tranny went bad?

Edit: They have a shop full of mechanics in the back. If they don't properly inspect the car it's not your problem.

take the cash, let them repo the car.

not worth cashing in those karma points though.

When I traded my 2007 2500 CTD in back in march, it was known that it had a programmer on it, full turbo back exhaust and no emissions hardware on it. They asked about it, asked if I had the parts (said no) and they still took it as a trade in.

Sure, they will trash your credit in the process though. They will also get a judgement against you for the interest and cost of repossession if it's not satisfied by whatever they get for your car at auction.

After pretty much every dealing I've had with a car dealer, I'd gladly trade in a vehicle that was fucked up without telling them. I never have, but I despise car salesmen, and their stupid "fuck them before they fuck you" games.

Yup... If I was selling to a private buyer, I would definitely let them know of any issues with the car. As far as a dealer goes, they have someone to look the thing over and assess a trade in value. If they miss something, not your problem, perhaps they should find another person to do the job

Depending on the age they're just gonna send it straight to auction anyways.

Fuck the dealer. Last car I traded had a burnt clutch and a blown head gasket. I had to run the heat full blast just to make it in to drop it off. Lol

Karma can suck it

My buddy's parents traded in a Nash Rambler for something, years ago.

Not two minutes after the papers were all signed & stamped, one of the lot guys comes in yelling about a wagon on fire in the parking lot. He asked whose it was, and my friend's dad points at the sales guy, smiles and says 'yours'.

My experience has been that once they take it, it's theirs...anything not caught in the evaluation is their problem. Might vary by state I guess.

Here's the deal

If they don't catch it before you walk out, and they find it afterwards, they are going to run it to auction so some other dealership gets stuck with it.

Seen it happen a bunch of times

Thats what I was gonna say, if it is old enough to have transmission troubles, it is an auction or wholesale car anyway.

Think about it this way, given what you know about car dealers do you think they would tell you about a known problem if you were shopping for that same used car on their lot and they believed you would buy it without finding out right away?

I recently traded in my 07.5 Dodge Ram with the first gen 6.7 Cummins and it had seen it's fair share of dealer time under warranty trying to get it figured out and updating shit over the years. When I traded it in they gave me that normal BS line about it going to auction because of it's condition and mileage. They finally agreed to give me what I wanted for it and when I came back the next week driving my new truck they had my Dodge on the used lot asking about $6K more than they gave me on a trade. They ended up selling it 2 months later for what they gave me on the trade so I didn't feel bad at all but I already knew that most car dealerships are dishonest.

Why would you give away a car to the dealer instead of trying to sell it for something?
