Strongman Mike Jenkins dies at 31

Strongman Mike Jenkins, 31, dies - WHP CBS 21 Harrisburg - Local Sports

HARRISBURG -- Mike Jenkins, one of the strongest men in the world, has died. He was 31. Jenkins, a resident of Dauphin County, died suddenly this morning. CrossFit Gamma, the gym in which Jenkins co-owned in Hershey, announced his death on its Facebook page but offered no other details. Jenkins finished fourth at this year's World's Strongest Man competition in China. His biggest win came at the 2012 Arnold Strongman Classic, in which he beat the biggest names in the sport, including Zydrunas Savickas, Derek Poundstone, and Brian Shaw. Jenkins, who was 6'6" and around 400 lbs., also won the 2012 Giants Live in Australia and the 2010 Arnold Strongman amateur event. A native of Westminster, Md., Jenkins also played college football at James Madison. He is survived by his wife, Keri.

Guy was a local legend in the Strong Man/Power lifting circle around this area. Nice guy and would talk to and have his picture taken with anybody. Sad.

Wasn't disparaging the man in the least so don't get your ovaries in a twist. I was pointing out that because he was so involved in the CF training that he may have had a known side effect and not realized it which caused his early demise.

Unlike many on here, if I am wrong I will gladly admit it and withdraw my argument as being invalid, I have done it more than a few times.

Would not surprise me as "supplements" even when legal are not under FDA regulations.

Sucks that a man in his prime and fit went so early

It's sad, because from what ive seen he was a really really good human being.

But let's be honest. 3000+mg/week of insert whatever test you can think of- plus not cycling but staying on that shit for years at a time- it's really hard on shit. A minor heart defect, minor genetic liver problems... this shit will kill your ass on the amount of oil these guys inject.

Back when I was in my 20's we had a body builder at Church that worked as a youth Minister. He was huge. One day he dropped dead moving the kichen table. The Corners report listed massive steriod use did him in.
A great guy and a really gentle man.
We were all stunned at his passing!

Just to stir the pot, but would anyone consider this a "fitness" lifestyle? As in to be "fit"?
I know a lot of good people with poor lifestyle choices.

Being strong and being fit are two completely different animals.

He was carrying approx. 33+% of unnecessary body weight. That's not fit by any means.

Plus there a great chance he was using PED's to increase his performance. Said PED's are incredibly hard on the cardiac system.

RIP Mike Jenkins, seems to have been a nice guy.

Jón Páll Sigmarsson had talked to his friends about the health issues he suffered because of the copious amounts of steroids he had used. But steroids were even more taboo then than they are now, so he did not go public with his concerns. He knew he was dying for about a year before his heart exploded during a deadlift.

He apparently told people that even though there was a heart defect in his family that there was no doubt in his mind that steroids made it much worse.

He was a strongman also, a 4 time WSM champion actually, and died at 32. Such extreme weight training is hard on the body, couple that with huge amounts of steroids and stuff understandably gets out of whack.

Bummer...

With that said, otherwise healthy people die everyday....

People who do not knowingly inject/injest gear to keep that edge....

The amount of gear these guys are on is flat amazing......

Sometimes it catches them

That's sad, I didn't recognize his name, but after watching the video I do remember him. Sucks!

Crap. Just a bummer.

I had sever eczema issues as a kid. Body did the "reject skin" stuff, irony is that was usually fatal, but in my case left me with a crazy sense of humor.

Irony is Cortisone -- weekly shots helped control the eczema to be livable.

Anyone remember the running fitness dude? Superfit, marathon runner, promoted running to keep fit. His family history was all the men died of heart failure in their 50's.... he dropped dead, while running, at 52. Heart failure.

Jim Fixx - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(died in 1984, but did start the fitness mantra still with us today. Didn't realize that was almost 30 years ago!)

I Googled Jim Fixx's first running book.

Man; Talk about bringing back memories!

My buddy's dad always had that book out on his desk when it first came out. And you can't miss it because it had a blood-red book cover.

And the way you've pissed away 50 years of your life is any smarter?
