Chicago, lowest murder rate in first quarter since 1958

Chicago Police: 2014 sees lowest 1st-quarter murder total in 56 years | abc7chicago.com
Quote:
April 1, 2014 (CHICAGO) -- Chicago's first-quarter murder total this year hit its lowest number since 1958, police say.

The first three months of the year saw 6 fewer murders than the same time frame in 2013--a 9 percent drop--and 55 fewer murders than 2012, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

There were 90 fewer shootings and 119 fewer shooting victims, drops of 26 and 29 percent respectively, according to police statistics. Compared to the first quarter of 2012, there have been 222 fewer shootings and 292 fewer shooting victims.

Overall crime is down 25 percent from last year, and police said more than 1,300 illegal guns were recovered in the last three months.
I'm having a hard time remembering what else happened in Illinois this year....hmmm...

....oh right. Concealed carry!

Yeah, because everyone knows that you can only murder somebody with a gun. Hammers, knives, and baseball bats are completely harmless.

I would really love to see the trend with numbers of what type of weapon, if any, was used.

I doubt conceal carry has anything to do with it.

For comparison, the murder rate in Indianapolis, IN, which is a very gun friendly city in a very gun friendly state, has seen an explosion in murders. Ending 2013 with a higher murder rate than Chicago and on pace to do it again, by a lot.

I think factors to murder rate have little to nothing to do with conceal carry and more to do with established gangs in the area, new gangs in the area, if new gangs are making land grabs, and control of the drug trade.

In a city like Chicago where the gang's territories are already established you aren't going to see as much violence as a city where gangs are still relatively new, and where smaller gangs are still competitive, and where the gang unit is still relatively small and/or non-existent....like Indianapolis. Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad Chicago and Illinois now have a path for CCW but I really don't see CCW as a cure to inner city violence. The majority of the guys killing and being killed already have guns whether legally or not.

Chicago is a liberal shithole and it's not just because of the politicians. The people there actually believe the shit they spew. I doubt there's been enough CCW holders so far to skew the murder rates. If anything you'd probably see some self defense shootings before the rate drops. Ghetto thugs I'd imagine aren't thinking about who does or doesn't have a CCW. The last few years we've had mild winters and record #'s for shootings. I'm sure the harshest winter in 30yrs had more to do with those numbers than anything else. Just wait until the weather warms up. The rate will go up.

It's been an unseasonal cold winter. More shut ins. Less out roaming and killing. That is all.

Umm, I doubt it's the coldest winter since 1968.

I'd say cold winter, and an aging population.

Violent crime tends to be a young man's sport.

What else happened is a very harsh winter, tends to slow things like this down. Wait til summer rolls around.

Sometimes the pro gunners are as bad as the anti-gunners. Don't take something that is inconsequential, and spin it into proof that X caused a change.

This was also the worst 1st quarter winter we have had in 40 years. That just MAY have something to do with this.

Wait until the weather gets warm/hot then lest see.

Also, isn't conceal carry illegal there? I don't pay much attention to that rat hole, but last I had heard the rest of the state was free, they were still barred from it in cook county?

It was a hard winter, not many criminals on the street.
They will catch up this quarter.

Its the cold weather. It hit 60 last week and there were more murders on that day than in the month of feb. The murders are happening in areas where people have been packing for yeqrs regardless of the law.

Umm, you should take 7 seconds to look up info before throwing out opinions.

We knew it was a doozy, but new numbers make it official: Chicago's seemingly endless winter was also its coldest since records began in 1872.

According to a statement released Tuesday by the National Weather Service -- it was not, unfortunately, an April Fool's joke -- Chicago experienced its coldest four-month period on record between December 2013 and March 2014.

CC had nothing to do with it at all, the first 5000 permits were just handed out in the last month or so. The coldest harshest winter in memory had everything to do with it. As stated previously when the weather warms up they will make up for lost time.

Does Cold Weather Affect Crime Rates? « Crime Stoppers Atlanta

Quote:
Crime is affected by weather in many ways. The elements influence our behaviors and emotions by inducing stress, causing depression, anger or agitation, or by creating environments in which crime flourishes. In extreme heat people also tend to drink more alcohol and get together more often, creating favorable circumstances for conflict. Consequently, violent crimes during summer greatly increase.

Criminologists have long accepted that blistering temperatures contribute to the rise of crime, but the connections between frigid conditions and illegal activities are less documented. While cold weather also augments anger and aggression, studies have shown that the resulting actions are less random than those committed in heat. Therefore, premeditated crimes such as property crimes and robberies increase.
Even in Jan, the Chicago Tribune stated that it was a cold winter and the upside could result in lower crime.

Cold not all bad - Chicago Tribune

Quote:
Cold not all bad
Upside could include harm to pests, protection of plants, lower crime, lower weight

January 07, 2014|By John Keilman, Geoff Ziezulewicz and Dan Hinkel, Tribune reporters

This week's extreme temperatures have come as a shock to Chicago's system, but scientists, researchers and aficionados of the cold say the plunging mercury can have surprising benefits for human beings and the rest of the natural world.

Monday's record-breaking temperatures, which bottomed out at 16 below at O'Hare International Airport, might still have done in some of the larvae, Venette said, though researchers will have to wait until spring to assess the carnage.

Other cold comforts can be found in the human world. For instance, statistics suggest that crime is less prevalent when the temperature drops.

Crime rates tend to jump in Chicago during the warmer months, and national crime statistics have shown that fewer violent and nonviolent crimes are committed in colder weather, said Matthew Ranson, an economist who wrote his dissertation on the issue at Harvard University. He said he would expect crime to drop throughout the cold snap.

"We see both a seasonal pattern … where there's less crime in cold months, but we see it also on a day-to-day basis," he said.

Academics continue to disagree as to why fewer crimes might be committed in colder temperatures. One theory is that people stay inside, limiting opportunities for crimes. Some researchers have proposed a biological link between heat and behaviors that lead to crime. Ranson said he thinks the numbers support both theories.
It doesn't have to be the coldest winter since 1958, it has to be cold enough. The first quarter temps were pretty much across the board colder than normal with spikes of record lows.
