1970 Chevy Caprice showed up...

In Syrupland, it is very hard to find a rustfree and clean older car. My first look was at a 74 ragtop Vette that the farmer said was mint.
Well, i paid a 'specialist' to go look at it for me. It was in horrible shape, so i passed. Sometimes 'mint' to a farmer means it got him from the ranch to the ice cream store and back

Next up was a guy advertising a 70 Caprice as a 9.5/10. The car sits in Alberta in Winter in a garage and spends its time in BC where it is hot and sunny. He has owned it for 5-6 years and it is a car that spent most of its life in Idaho.

Well, pics looked good and in person it looked better. i went back again with a couple gearhead buddies to really go through it. The body is straight and no bondo. No rust, no surface rust. Trunk immaculate, interior very good. The car has a true 59,000 miles on it. The only modification done was changing 3 on the tree to a 4 speed Muncie.
Rear end is 3.08 and the colors match the offered colours that year and cowl tag. i bought it and drove it home. She floated down the road at 75 mph. No smoking, no gnashing of gears, just great all around.

i then went on kijiji (our craiglist) and bought a few goodies. Period correct MT valve covers. Edlebrock 4 barrel intake and carb. i bought new long tube headers and HEI distributor.
The rad was taken out and re cored. New hoses, plugs and wires.

i am now at the point of removing the exhaust. Then everything new gets put on. Its a slow process as i am mechanically inept, so i hjave a buddy helping when he can. As winter is still here bigtime, i have time.

In the rear end pic, notice the trailer hitch. It was a factory order option and can tow 6000 lbs. i will be removing it as it just looks dumb

Damn, that is nice.

I would leave the hitch.

Please refrain from adding modrin low-profile tars. Those wheel wells want to see them some black sidewall.

Save all of the original parts, obviously.

Stay away from Flowmaster mufflers because they all sound tinny and hollow. Hush Thrush or even Cherry Bombs (installed backwards) for the win.

EDIT: And if your air cleaner says 'Edelbrock' and exposes a K&N filter, I will personally vaccinate you.

Sweet ride.

IMO lose the alloys for some 17" rally's. And make sure that bitch has front discs.

Next was tear down. The valve covers had zero sludge! But, the covers, intake and carb were all leaking in various areas. The gaskets were well worn. Pretty sure no one touched anything on the engine ever. The only sludge observed was on the connecting rod sleeves.

My grandmother had almost that exact car when I was a kid. Only difference was it was a 4-door, tan/brown in color, and had an automatic. Granpda sold it after she died, and I've never seen it since.

You may need a cam and valvesprings to get the most out of the 4v and headers. My 350 2v in my 73 camaro would float the valves at stupid low rpm.

When all finished, about 2g's into her in upgrades. Not a lot, but enough to be a strong dependable cruiser.

Fuck this 17" hipster rice Honda BGT shit.

No white lettering, either.

Steelies with dog dish hubcaps would be nice. And maybe - maybe - trim rings.

Nice grandpa car.

Ditch the blue heater hose.

I'm torn on full black or raised white letters.

yeah, i hope not. i hope the carb can be set up well enough that i do not need to go that route yet.

my buddy has built a lot of 350's and he was the one that told me to buy the 'used' carb and intake. In 70, they were smog free and under advertised hp, hopefully the 650 will work fine.
:fingerscrossed:

Looks like a nice driver, my mom had a 4 door Caprice of the same vintage. The back window leaked so keep an eye on that. She backed it into a tree in the middle of our front yard one day leaving for work, she had taken a valume! LOL

If 15's I'd go white letter, with 17's black is fine. 15's look tiny with black walls.

yes, i would look for 15's. i am leaning towards flipping the sidewalls now. The rallys will have to be a good used deal for me to do it.
