Big explosion at Aerojet in Rancho Cordova...

That's right outside Sacramento, for you non-geographic types...

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- A large explosion and fire occurred at Aerojet following an incident with a rocket motor Wednesday morning, authorities reported.

An explosion was heard at 8:55 a.m. and a large plume of smoke estimated at two miles wide could be seen rising from the scene.

Fire officials were responding, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

A fire in the area was said to be contained.

I saw the cloud driving in to work. It was easily two miles wide. It didn't look like smoke, but looked like steam vapor.

It hit a temp layer a couple of thousand feet up and flattened out.

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. -- Engineers at Aerojet are trying to figure out what went wrong after an older solid rocket motor unexpectedly ignited Wednesday morning during a routine test, authorities reported.

A blast was heard at 8:55 a.m., and a plume of smoke estimated at two miles wide could be seen rising from the scene.

Aerojet officials said a crew conducting an inspection was working remotely, so nobody was nearby when the blast occurred and no injuries were reported.

"It wasn't supposed to go off," said Linda Cutler, spokeswoman for Aerojet. "The kind of evaluation they were doing was really on how the motor is aging and other things like that. So, it was not a planned ignition test."

Fire officials responded to the area, but the blaze was contained. The blast occurred in a remote area of the 8,000-acre facility, located south of Highway 50 near Hazel Avenue.

However, some propellant leaked out onto the ground. Environmental health officials were said to be on the scene evaluating the mess.

Aerojet officials said they are in contact with air-quality officials dealing with any fallout from the blast.

"There is no danger to the community," Cutler added.

Inspectors were in the process of essentially sandblasting away a small section of the motor when the ignition occurred, Aerojet reported.

The company reported no similar incidents in the past related to this particular motor.

Aerojet, a major Sacramento-area employer, has been in the Rancho Cordova area since the early 1950s after moving from Southern California. The company saw dramatic growth in the 60s, when it became a key site for rocket development.

Over the years, the company has downsized, but the site is still the company's headquarters and home to missile and space propulsion operations.

I was sitting in a meeting today from 9 to 10 and noticed the smoke out over lake Natomas. I pointed it out to the others in the meeting and didn't think anymore of it. Figured it was a grass fire or something. Thanks Glenn.

Just talked to a friend who works there and she confirmed the story above. Not really a big deal, but they did let it burn itself out. Her building's a ways away from the test site (she said it's actually 12,000 acres, not 8) and they didn't really hear or feel anything.

I liked when they ran the shuttle motor they were testing. it felt and sounded like a gas station exploded nearby, but it kept going for a while. lots of smoke. could hardly tell it was actually happening 20 miles away from where I was standing.
