Traditional hot rods

also known as "rat rods"/...who owns em, loves em , has built them?

I am thinking about possibly beginning one if I can find the right body and was just curious if anyone else has done one up.

I love rat rods, but I think they are becoming too popular in the last few years. I would expect parts and car prices to reflect this soon, if it hasn't already set in.

That is sweet. You keeping it primed and basic or going full finish?

Plan so far is leave the body just like it is. Engine will be tricked out. interior will be slick. Might wind up spraying it a flat dark grey. Don't really want it flat black though.

5.0 HO lower intake. working on the custom adapter for 4 - 2bbl carbs. Tuning nightmare but it should look pretty trick once done.

Looks like a nice setup.

I have an old AMC 360 I was planning on using for the motor mated to a TH350 unless I can find an old 3 speed lying around somewhere. Been kinda half ass looking for a Model A body for cheap since they are the most plentiful around but still deciding on what I want and also what falls into my lap. My dream car would be a 49-51 Merc chopped and layed out, but they aren't too cheap anymore

Not sure right now still doing a ton of research. I figure by next year sometime I will have the plans laid out and begin the parts hunting process.

It's amazing what you can find just wandering around the right junkyards.
My buddy just pulled this one:
1954 Buick Special Riviera 2dr
Went from this>

To this in a week with just a set of tires & a little washing

A buddy of mine has a Rocket 88 in stock form and driven as well as an old Chevy sedan (not sure model right now) that is also driveable.

tried to get him to sell me the Chevy so I could massage it a bit and he about cut me open over the plans to chop the top on it.

I am gonna start scouring backyards and wrecking yards over the next year or so for the candidate.

this is the second one my buddy did , I used to work with him at Shaffers
...the pic on the trailer is after 3 weeks.....starting from the rusty tub which was only really the outer skin, he drove it to hot august nights from Carson city.

and the other three are after he totally rebuilt everything, I think he's only 22 now, one of the best I've worked with. I have a few more detailed pics but got to run

My father sold a 49 Merc last year that he had redone in the late 80's-early 90's. He did everything back to stock colorwise, and had the int done in velour (stock?). Then he let it sit. And sit. And sit. It started to rust around the rockers, but was overall pretty nice still. Had all the period accessories too: fender skirts, visor, curbfeelers, a pillar spot light.

$10,000.00

The guy that bought it had been after it (the same exact car) since before my dad got it! (~20 years!) All he was gonna do was fix the rust, drop it, and drive it.

Small smattering of pictures I took at a Party I went to recently at a friends house. The owner of the home has a lot of friends into rat rods, traditional, classic cars, muscle cars, etc...

I really like rat rods.. kinda like a way for the average man to get into hot rods. But.. there is something to be said for a high dollar hot rod.. My dad builds and sells them for a living, and his last one got about 47k out of it. It was way SWEEEET. Those are some sweet lookin rods though!

I like 'em, but what I really liked was a link someone here posted a couple of years ago to a Japanese builder of old school custom motorcycles. Ilike to ride motorcycles, but stylistically very few do much for me. These were different.... I tried to find the comapny, but have struck out so far.
