PSP won't connect to WEP-protected wireless network....help.

Got plenty of time to kill this weekend, trying (again) to get my son's Sony PSP to connect to our home wireless network....with no success.

I setup this network, enabled WEP, and created a unique password, and I've been running 3 different PC's (2 laptops and a desktop) connected wirelessly to it for several years, so I'm familiar with the different settings that need to be made...problem is, no matter how many times and how many different ways I try to get this PSP to connect to it, I have no luck.

The WLAN switch on the PSP is on, it can scan and see my wireless network (and several of my neighbor's), but it will not pick up the SSIP on it's own, I have to manually enter it. I also enter the WEP password, but when I test the connection, it keeps coming back with the error that it was not able to connect to the access point, and to check the security settings.

If I don't enter the SSID, it will not detect the access point at all, so evidently when I do enter it, at least it's seeing it - but regardless of how may times I check and doublecheck that the WEP password is correct, it still will not connect to the access point.

Any ideas? Should I disable WEP on my home network and then see if it'll connect?

Is the SSID visible or invisible? I'd check that first, then give the psp mac addy a connection.

If both don't work, turn off ze wep. Or try connecting to someone elses network.

Works fine for me, maybe somthings broke with your psp.

I just went through this crap with my sons, change your Network Authentication to Shared in your router, and you will also have to change it in anything else that is using the wireless network to connect to the router. Also you need to set the transmission rate or basic rate to 2mbps.

Here is a link to all the trouble codes and info.

Btw you can still use WEP with the PSP.

Well, shoot...I've been working on this thing for hours now, and have made a little progress, but still can't connect to the Internet.

I visited the link posted, and it was helpful, but even after searching everything on there and trying everything I can think of (turning off the WEP, resetting the transmit rate to 2 mps, switching back and forth between Open and Shared Key network, manually entering the router's primary and secondary DNS addresses.....still no luck. I even changed the transmit mode to 802.11"b" only...didn't help.

No ports are blocked on the router. No firewall is enabled. No MAC filters are set.

The one change that made the most difference was changing the network type on the wireless router from Shared Key to Open - once I did that, at least the PSP would see the wireless network, obtain an IP address, and attempt to connect - even with WEP enabled.

I still get a error, though - "DNS error Error Code : (80410416)"

The website explains this code as: "No connection to the DNS server / failed connection." - but it doesn't give any tips on how to solve it.

I've tried letting the PSP set it's own IP and DNS addresses, I've set them all manually to exactly what the wireless router's settings are, and I've tried different combinations of the two....still no luck.

I'm on Road Runner cable, with DHCP enabled (it has to be)...I can't help but wonder if the "dynamic" hosting is what's causing the problem.

What gets me is that going through the "network settings" menu on the PSP and making changes, then testing the connection at that point seems to be successful. The PSP obtains an IP address, opens a browser, then gives me a screen that says I'm successfully connected to the Internet. I can't do anything at that point, though - I have to go back through the PSP menu and scroll up and over to the actual Web browser, then open it. It sees my network, obtains an IP address....then pauses and gives me the DNS error everytime.

Frustrating.

What version is your PSP's firmware? some of the older ones don't support encryption (at least, correctly).

Update the firmware to the latest, and use WPA encryption. I've never had any luck getting WEP working on a regular PC; I can't imagine how much of a PITA it would be on a PSP.

Try this forum on Gametab.com , although this thread is a bit old, it is over 9 pages long, they do mention the same error code
http://www.gametab.com/forums/showth...p?t=348&page=6

I would try posting there if this thread does not help.

at least you are abit closer to getting to work.

Got it!
This entry was made on the PSP.
Had to do a Master Reset, then re-entered all the Network info.

Damn, this thing is cool. (And I'm stubborn.)
