getting wild geese to stay around??

Every spring, I always briefly get a couple of canadian geese in my pond (about 75 yards from the house) I always thought it would be cool if they stayed for the summer, but they never do. A couple of days ago, a pair showed up that were much braver than any in the past. They actually came up within 30 ft of the house, they didnt seem too worried when I would walk around doing various things outside, and most shocking to me, they were standing in my driveway when I needed to use it to drive to the shop- they didnt even fly away when I slowly crowded them off the driveway with the Ranger- they just honked in a meacing way and waddled off across the yard.

Later in the evening they took wing, but I noticed today that they were back, but not as far up in the yard yet.

What do I do to encourage them to stay(besides saying "please")

Or is there some reason I dont want them to stay (how bad will they shit all over the yard??)

You can feed them, but they will leave.. what you need to keep is the chicks from a brood and if they never fly off they will never learn to leave.

We raised quite a few generations of Canadian geese when I was a little kid maybe 15-20 years ago. Once they learn to fly they will always fly away. They might come back around spring time, but they never stick around. You can feed them and they will probably keep coming back on a regular basis if they know they can trust you. Remember if you raise them, don't touch their wings. They are VERY delicate and they get hurt very easily to the point where the tips flop out to the sides and they can't fly. You didn't hear this from me but if you truly want them to stick around you need to get the eggs and incubate them, that way when they hatch they are impressed upon you and they think you are their parent. They follow you around the house like puppy dogs and shit everywheres.

My dad has a pair that come back to his lake once a year. They raise their family on the island and wander around and pick bugs out of the yard. They are getting used to him but if i take my dog up there they chase her. He's a bit tired of them as they keep the dock covered in shit and they claim the island so he can't get out there to mow before the poison ivy takes it over.

Here's my buddy that has been dubbed 'Hopalong'.

He's missing 1/2 of his foot, and it looks like his leg was broken at one time. He can walk... sort of...

He's pretty darned tame and eats out of my hand. Never hisses or gets pissy, just hobbles up like a dog.

He's injured and would make an easy target for predators as he doesn't fly much at all; yet, he is the friendliest little bugger.

We hate these things. They are nothing but a nuisance. Every year they hang out longer and longer and have more chicks. They do nothing but pester local wildlife and drive them out. They shit on everything and think they own it all. You can have them keep them away from here. Canada keep your geese.

I chase them out of my yard with a 2x4. I can't imagine why somebody would want to keep those loud, angry, shit factories around. Just wait until the goslings show up, then the fuckers will chase you around your yard to protect them. The water hose and/or pressure washer works great, also. There's nothing like having to wait to get to work because 40 of them are in your way and don't give a fuck.

Easy. Stop shooting. Be nice. Talk to them and tell them they are welcome.

It will work fine.

fun fact:
30 geese on your yard for a morning can shit enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket.

apply lead and gunpower liberally to prevent this.

I recommend shooting at them.
Several farm ponds around have them hanging out. People shoot at them and try to run them off year round because they are a nuisance.
It doesn't seem to work.

If you figure out what you do to make them leave - let me know.
