Medical assistance - IV gone wrong?

Hi all!

SO... I was hospitalized for a few days with heart problems. I had an IV in each hand.

No biggie. But I have been out for a few days and I have what I swear feels like a piece of plastic in the same vein the IV was in, just a few inches further from the site.

Is something like that even possible? You can actually see something through the skin in there, but it doesn't seem like what I am saying is even remotely possible.

So, what say ye - the PBB? Do I need to go back and have this looked at?

If you want to search for previous happenings, what's in your arm while the IV is in is called a catheter, I just dont feel like googling it, but I've never heard of it happening before

I would call the place and have them check it out. If it is a pice of IV they might have to do a cut down to take it out. They may take an Xray to see if they can see it.

That was fast!

Thanks. I will head back in.

One item of info, the area where the IV/Catheter was, is at least 1.5 inches from where this "thing" is.

I had the same IV thingy in both hands. Neither hand is tender or swollen etc at the site.

It feels very small like a grain of rice... Maybe the Obamas are tracking me.

Maybe it's a clot that formed on the catheter and broke off.

Clot is a scary word!

We are on the phone with the dial a nurse now.

I am stuck on a work conference call so I can't do much now. Depending on what she says, I guess I am headed back in.

Thanks guys!

Are you fat?

When I was 13, I had major surgery and I had all kinda IV problems because I was a little lard ass. That damn flubber does all kinda miserable crap to IVs. Add an incompetent person and you've got problems.

I'll spare you the horror stories but I would HIGHLY recommend you get that puppy checked out.

Yes you can sever a chunk of cath if you re-insert the needle after pulling back.

Cut it open with a die-grinder to relieve the pressure.

Done & done.

Funny!!!! I told my wife -and meant it- in my 20s I would have used a box cutter and fixed it myself. I am to much of a pansy for that these days.

Side bar... the "nurse" just came in... I am sure "she" played the leprechaun in those movies. She had better sideburns than I ever had!!!

I was sitting in the doctors office yesterday with box cutter open and cutting out splinters. Figured if I was going to slip and cut myself, it was a good place to do it.

Hope he got it taken care of. Thrombophlebitis left unchecked can develop into a pulmonary embolism which is a quick way to wind up with a case of the deadsies.
