when i lived in san leandro, ca, we had this great metal recycling scrap yard for small scrap pieces or full sized new and used steel square and round tubing for good prices.

now in austin, i only hear about places to stay away from, only because i am not mexican. can anyone recommend a place, anywhere around austin. i have done the google search, so know where they are, just not sure how the experience is. tia.

AMP Recycling off Howard Lane. They have new and scrap steel. But it is really scrap. Sometimes your get lucky, though. Priced by the pound used.

buying, joe. i want some welding practice pieces, need a 2'x2'x 1/4" to fix a hole in the brush hog, am building a carport and don't want to pay the 570 the steel yard wants and would like to build a welding table.

There is a nice one over here in that I used to frequent to make artsy fartsy welded stuff. Havent been there in a while though. Never found enough material to make a decent welding table, but enough for misc projects.

The local steel yard here sell remenent steel pieces for $0.60 a pound, might want to look into that. I have gotten lots of projects done out of that pile.

There was a steel place on north Lamar (pretty far north) that had a scrap pile you could root around in. Enough steel my buddy used it for various things on his Blazer.

I'm not even sure it's still there there

got to come to the south side of san antonio for the one i use, probably about an hour and a half trek for you, depending on what side of austin you reside in. Its Ashley Scrap yards and i dont know how they compare on prices to anywhere else because i never bought from other places, they seem to be cheaper than other places i called around to...
