What could make your house smell like sour milk?

I think something is under the house but it doesnt smell dead. Smells almost like soured milk or something. Not rotting flesh or sewage. I dont really wanna crawl under the house.

It doesnt smell like mold/mildew either. I'm stumped.

friend back in college ruined her car by forgetting about the quart of milk she bought and left in the back seat for a month.

I'm guessing you've run water through all your drains. Did something leak under the fridge?

Do you have kids?

We had a awful smell in our living room. We had a babysitter the night before the smell started. It smelled like vomit. We thought our babysitter had thrown a party and someone had ralphed on the couch. Turned out to be .......

Spoiled milk!

Our 2 year old had pushed a sippy cup of milk under the couch.

standing water in a plant container.

I will say this. I could smell it in pockets at the other end of the house and all through out the house. It took 2 days to find the actual source

Yep, that's where I would start. We had the same type of smell last summer after running the AC. The drain ended up being clogged and made the upstairs smell somewhere in between rotton eggs and sour milk.

Another odd source of smell from water can come from old water bottles left in the sun or in cars. My parents car stank of rotten milk/eggs/nastiness not quite pinpointable once. They could not figure it out.

Finally my dad opened a water bottle that had been in the back window for who knows how long. I guess the bacteria from drinking off it, plus the sun, caused some kind of nasty reaction in the bottle. He opened it and was almost knocked on his ass. It was permeating through the closed bottle it smelled so bad, I can only imagine what it was like being my old man and opening it.

No idea how long the bottle was in the back window.
