8 Bolt Hummer wheel and Radials?!?

I've read several places that you can't use radials with the 8 bolt military wheel. Is this actually correct, and if so, why can't you use radials? Also, I will be putting the wheels on a vehicle that weighs considerably less than a HMMWV, would that matter? (My truck weighs about 4750lbs or so). This question came up after I called a military surplus dealer and he told me he's been getting some 8 bolt wheels in with the 37" radials. Since these are military take-off's I wondered if using the 8 bolt wheel with the 37" was actually doable.

I have always heard the same as far as not being designed for radials (at least in their stock configuration) -- but there are many here with lighter trucks who do it and say it's fine. I'd tend to believe the manufacturer just incase they're actually right. But, there's a reason they are so cheap.

Well, just got the quote from the machine shop for recentering the wheels. They want 182.08 each...so I guess I'm out on using Hummer wheels. Couldn't believe it was that high.

As far as the tire is concerned it's a 16.5" rim. The magnesium runflat may have issues with a radial however. Change to a PVC style beadlock.

PS. I helped install radials on a local Fire Dept M998 years ago. We just ditched the runflats, and I used a Beadblaster to seat the tire

The difference is that the 8 bolt rims are rated to 30 psi max and the 12 bolts are 50 psi IIRC. The bias ply tires run at lower pressure than the radials. But, the radial tires for a 16.5" rim are load range E and are pretty stiff on their own, so running them at lower pressure isnt usually an issue on lighter rigs. Ive got 8 bolts and radials ready to install on my ZJ and I doubt Ill have any problems out of them. Ive got them set at 30 psi right now, but I might venture to 32.

Ive always been curious as to the actual difference the weight of the vehicle makes to actual tire pressure.

The 8 bolts are junk IMO, I'd go with the 16 bolt, it has a higher weight rating, and can run higher PSI [ there's a newer 2 piece rim for the 16,000 ECV II hummers that has 24 bolts or so].

But the 8 bolts should be fine on a lighter non-hummer configuration.

It seems the surplus 8 bolts and 16 bolts are similar in price, I'd spring for the extra little bit of money and get the 12 bolt wheels.

wasnt there a difference in the insert and wheel gap for the bead of the tire, the radial tire/12 bolt rims were inended for a thicker beda and had a larger gap between the rim and insert.

fwiw i run 8 bolts on my 6000+ lbs chevy with boggers and staz 7" inserts.

8 bolt rims: Do not go over 30 PSI! EVER. The 8 bolts are for the lightweights HMMWV (old ones). Besides the pressure limit: If you air up an 8 bolt on the hub, and the bolts do let go, it will smack you. The wheel is held on by the inboard half. The 12 bolts are much safer: the outboard half is bolted on the hub, if the bolts were to let go, the wheels goes towards the truck. Torquespecs, and sequences, and maintance are all important.
