Military H1 winch

Does anybody know who makes the electric winch that comes on the Military Humvee? Im trying to find some specs on it to make sure its the same one that i got so that i can make sure i didnt get ripped off.

current hydraulic ones are milemarker.

Would it be easier to change it over to 12 volt or set up a 24volt supply to it

why not just go with an aftermarket winch vs worrying about having a OEM one.

IMO the factory warns are gigantic and heavy and reduce approach angle. the MM winches fit much better up front between the frame rails and are significantly lighter.

24v warn. I have two sitting in my garage. Not worth a shit. Definately not worth re-winding. I ditched mine for a cheap chinese 12k. They're bulky, slow, problematic if not used regularly/recently...there's a reason they went to MM. You can have the better of mine if you pay for shipping. It's that crappy, but you may want to use it for parts. My advice: replace it and re-drill the holes in the plate you should already have and you'll save yourself a ton of stress. The winch is a last resort, it's GOTTA work, so get a good one. Dont make my mistake and get a cheap replacement either. I'm already on my 4th and finally moved up to a decent/fast one. Still had to fab some motor/gb casings to make it bullet proof. Besides, the Warn elec. winch is only 9k which means its not strong enough to pull at the end of the cable under certain (common) circumstances.

The Warn electric isnt bad, but its just way to big for only being 6000lbs unit. It's waterproofed to an extent an I just replaced the 24v with a 12v motor.

just like to note how fucking worthless the m.m. winches are on a up-armor humvee. It's pretty awesome how that got overlooked, and how it's still looked to as a safety measure by most commands. On another note, more to the point of the thread, i'd be weary of any winch I got off any surplus vehicles and if they were at one point up-armor or were used in anything other then stock configuration, if so, that thing is more then likely wore out.

Most M1114 Uparmoreds had winches in the rear, and if you were stuck, you would have to snatch once or twice to even be affective. Now the heavier M1151 Uparmoreds have winch plates in the front but no winch. Those modles are so heavy it takes several other hmmwv's to get out, "in a pinch".

I have a brand new WARN 12,000 pound electric winch on my HMMWV and it kicks ass....I have not abused it yet though.

You can change your 24 volt winch over by swapping motors.

You can easily spot the MIL SPEC winches by teh marking and the motor is vented. The newer ones also have the military style controller connection (remote alone costs $135-I had to find one separately)

I just put on the MM 12K hydro winch and love it. Its lighter, fits perfectly in the frame rails, doesnt reduce approach angle (warn ones bounce off the rocks often). Also if you add the heavy ass warn you need to install the heavier duty front springs and get the extended UCP for it. The MM pulls forever and has two speeds to help get the cable in and out. It is slow though, but who cares? Many who I was with really lied my MM vs. their warn on our last outing. We were winching quite a bit on some crazy trails.

keep an eye on the milemarker bumper/winch plate. The holes the lower a-arm bolt go through are elongated, if the bolts aren't torqued to the right ft/lbs they will wander and cause steering issues.

In the Army if you're stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere by yourself, a winch is probably the least of your concerns.

Things to consider:
-Your vehicle is probably about 5-6K lbs lighter than a current up-armor Humvee loaded with gear.
-Most of the MM winches on our M1114's had a couple years of sand/rust/crust on them because nobody ever used the things.
-Big push bumpers are much handier in a military application, you probably don't have a need to purposely ram into things on a regular basis.
-Your winch will probably get much better preventative maintenance
-Your winch doesn't have to be idiot-proof to operate (I served with soldiers that would make Forrest Gump look like a genius)
-You probably don't have a big 6x6 (or 8x8) following you around to drag you out of trouble. Our main Humvee winch was a 5 ton truck with a non-issue 50' strap that was "borrowed" from a KBR contracter's truck .

My point is: Military needs and Civvy needs are totally different. Forget about what the Army uses and just use what works best for you.

One more day for ANATRAM. After that, $20+ shipping gets one to whoever wants one. One of them was pretty well scavenged already, but there is one fully complete winch up for grabs here. If you want the mounting plate, its another $10. It doesn't come with the frame extension brackets cause I don't have any, and found you don't really need any if you want a fully hidden winch that doesn't extend past the frame rails (you have to make your own plate for this to work). I know it's possible cause I made mine to fit tight, high, and incognito and can show anyone else how for nuttin.
