Who has done a motor swap?

I have a 93 and thinking of a swap. I would like to have a Duramax but that to expensive. I can get a 6.0, tranny and case for 3500 and I have some performance parts for that motor already and I am familar with it. But a 12V would be much easier.
Has anyone done one and do you have a link or a tech article?

I 6.0L Vortec would be a dog in an H1 unless you used a supercharger. Then, you have to buy 93 just to get the most out of it.

So go with the cummins! You won't be sorry!

Actually the AM General / GEP blocks are forged by Navistar. HMMWV/H1 has fair number of bits from different manufacturers.

On some newer 6.5 Turbo engines you can see the Navistar logo on the engine valley apparently.

Cummins 5.9L or 4BT is a popular option for H1's, mechanical and you don't have to deal with all the computers to get it up and running.

I'd either go with another 6.2 or 6.5 OEM engine setup [although going from a NA to a turbo on a hummer is a bit of work] or Cummins.

Duramax is a nice engine but it's a lot of work, and it's expensive to pay someone else to do it. Most duramax H1 conversions run 25-35,000$.

The guys who do it for less then that don't realize the amount of work involved and either never finish the job or go out of business. [sin city / twisted diesel]

A 5.9Cummins is the way to go. Just research the shit out of it before you do it. The 6.0 Power stroke is kinda wide because of the "V" angle. Plus its a POS IMHO. The 7.3 has the same width problem. 6.5 turbos and 6.2 NA (or aftermarket turbo) still are pretty limited in output because of the low head pressure capability (under 13psi). If you do go with a Cummins, go Gen I cause its really REALLY simple and capable of 1000+ hp if you want to get really crazy with it. Be ready for a 4" body lift, 12k half shafts, vertical radiators, and front diff centering conversion. Not to be a dick, but you might want to research the previous threads that have discussed a topic before you start another one.

BTW, I dont care what anyone tells you, get ready for an expensive project, even if you do it yourself.

putting a cummins into and H1 is a lot of work. And if you are not good at fabricating and electric, don't even try to do it yourself. And like the guys before me said, it's expensive. But when it's done, it's a lot of fun

The 4BT is a 4 Cyl. 3.9L, isn't it? I'd think thats kinda small for a DD. I guess if you're gonna make it into trailer-queen/crawler, then it's got the torque, but the driveability on the road would be shit I'd think.

Are you talking about a gas 6.0, like a V-tec? Thats kinda like putting a Briggs in a Peterbuilt. I doubt you'd get better than 6mpg. at freeway speed.

Nope a 6.0 PSD. But I've about decided against that too much electronics to mess with.
