half shaft boot replacement

I need to change out the boot on the outer end(the side that goes into the hub). Do I have to tear the whole half shaft down to replace that or is there a way to take that end off? I looked at flash but it doesn''t have anything for that boot replacement that doesn''t show taking the whole thing apart.

Any tips?

Thanks

It depends on which halfshaft version you are dealing with. If it's an early style shaft or 12k shaft, then the outboard CV can be knocked off with a hammer fairly easily. If it's the standard 94-04 type shaft (most likely), then trying to take the outboard joint off usually ends up damaging it and you will need to disassemble the inboard side first. The factory CV Boot kit for these comes with extra clamps and clips for this very reason.

Thanks Scott. It's on a '93 model. I actually ordered a front halfshaft from you last week.

On the '93 I don't see the retaining ring on the inside. Just the outside ring that doesn't look like it can be removed without tearing it up.

I might have to give you a shout in a little while if that is ok.

You can't see it because its inside the joint, you'll need to put it in a vice and knock the hell out of it to get it past the snap clip after removing the snap ring.

I posted a response to this on another forum - I think that was you also?
You need to knock the outer CV joint off, replace the boot, and then put it back together.
