Whats it worth?
1988 HMMWV not restored, runs good with good title, and ~23k miles. It was a daily driver in college, but I don't have much use for it now in today's economy.
It is a great party wagon!! ![]() I can't post pics at the moment my subscription is out, but I'll fix that tomorrow. Any help is appreciated. Frank

Depending on mechanical condition I'd say $20k-$30k. Post this over at www.SteelSoldiers.com in the HMMWV forum to get a better idea from other actual HMMWV owners.

Thanks for the info. I'll try steelsoldiers for some real HMMWV people. I thought they would be here. Mabye some more people will chime in.

The H1 crowd generally frowns on the HMMWV crowd, I guess because they paid 3X the cash, lol. I'd take a HMMWV if I could afford one, but I'd have to swap a Cummins in place of the GM crap.
But Steel Soldiers is the place to be for just about any sort of military vehicle, be it a CUCV, HMMWV, Unimog, APC, Deuce, HEMTT or whatever. Good group of enthusiasts that usually puts the MVPA to shame.

I'm cool with being frowned upon by the H1, 2 and 3 owners. To each his own, but that's not my style.
The 6.2 is definitely not my choice as a prime motivator, but when you run out of diesel in the middle of nowhere it will run on damn near anything. Just bring earplugs. Frank

Nice HMMWV. Dont believe we frown upon HMMWVs, such a rumor. Actually love seeing them, comparing. Same offhighway capabilty. Checked one out the other day, sure awesome. simple, lightweight, and rare.
Take a look at humvee.net, and G503 also. |

The issue I find with the military version is that you can have struggles getting parts. No dealership will even touch a M998 and they will not touch parts for them. Anything you need from AMG you are screwed unless you have connection to the military for some "donated" parts. IMO

I never heard of the hmmwv vs h1 thing either.
I go for a hmmwv if it was a restored, mint piece with a fairly modern revision. Otherwise they're a bear to work on, rusted, seized frame bolts, and most hmmwv's I see in public hands aren't well maintained. They're usually running 15+ year old tires, wheels and ball joints. The commercial hummers have the 10.3k frames like the A2's, with 12k frame being an option and standard in the last model year. There's a few hmmwv owners here as well, but most are on humvee.net, g503 and steel soldiers. Personally if I was hardcore about having the humvee look I'd get a 92-93 hummer with a shit interior and just toss it. Most are tan from those years and you can bolt on whatever items you want. The Hmmwv's that command top dollar seem to be the restored units with complete data plates and accessories, with the turbo option. I've seen some really nice ones but they're priced really high especially considering the economy.. 35-40k+. Daily drivers that aren't complete military restorations I've seen going for 20-25k... For that price I'd get a H1, you'll get more truck for the money [lately there has been a few very good deals on later model h1's here and there]. IMO. Btw, part's arent that bad, AM General and Kascar sells them. Not all of orders require you to be in the government. The last batch of parts I ordered were all painted carc [carc tan, green and black] I had to repaint them to match my truck

Agreed, most parts are pretty easy to come by if you know where to look. that doesn't mean they aren't ridiculously expensive, but you have to pay to play. Some of the special military gear is rare and hard to find like some of the radio and weapon brackets.
The HMMWV vs. H1 thing I experienced myself and I'll be honest, it probably did color my perception of a lot of Hummer owners. I will also admit that I personally think the H2 and H3 are a bit of a joke, but that's just my personal opinion. Back tot he HMMWV thing, I mentioned to a group of H1 owners that were riding a local trail while we were talking that I wouldn't mind having a HMMWV one day and they laughed and talked down about them and about how cool they were and were "riding in style" and all this sort of BS. Of course naturally they didn't have anything but bad things to say about my bob'd '74 Dodge W100 I was wheeling then and they really gave the Jeep guys a hard time. Quite honestly, the entire group acted like a bunch of egotistical assholes and if it were up to me, they would no longer exist on this world as a waste of life. I've also seen similar things posted on other forums about how much better the H1s are, but honestly, no one buys a military vehicle because they like comfortable interior or A/C. I know I didn't buy M715 because I wanted something shiny and nice to ride in and anyone who buys a HMMWV thinking they are getting a cheap H1 is crazy, but it happens. So anyway, that is the background on my HMMWV vs H1 comment, but it was meant in jest. I will say the quality of the Hummer owners here are much better than those I have met personally and seen on other forums. There still seems to be a lot of Hummer owners that believe too much of what the dealer tells them and look down on cheaper and sometimes much more capable rigs but I guess that comes with the image and the $60k price tag.

Lol, I dig it but then I think a M820 is the ultimate party wagon, lol. I don't like gadgets, it's just more crap to break, lol.

I have never heard of the h1 vrs humvee thing either. I think any h1 owner who wheels his truck secretly (or maybe not so secretly) wants a humvee -- it's lighter, simpler, etc. I almost got one but didn't want to deal with dmv issues some owners I know have had. Like Kurt, if I ever get another truck it will be a humvee or an early model hummer.

Quote:
1. A few hours driving over rough terrain. 2. Catching a mouth full of that steering wheel. 3. Overcharging the batteries and having them explode on your passenger. (All from personal experience.) All that being said, after a bobbed deuce a 998 would be my choice military vehicle. EDIT-- Looks like a Marine rig, how's the frame? Any rust?

Without knowing if the diffs, ball joints, bearings, hubs, etc were ever changed/maintained, I wouldn't go above $18K. That being said, I wouldn't buy it to keep it as is. Unrestored = ready to chop up and mod. or restore and resell. If you clean it up, you may be able to get as high as $23k on ebay, but in today's market....that would be the top of the scale without a full restore IMO. If you don't need the cash, hang on to it. You'll be glad you did. Selling it now is like saying "I want as little as possible" and that's exactly what you'll get.
