Shrek build - 73 Scout on tons

Been wheeling since '89 in a variety of rigs from an 89 F-250 (didn't know any better), two different 85 Toyotas, an 89 Toy converted into a straight axle crawler, and a couple Jeep TJs. Built a couple more 85 Toyotas with my son who has now taken the latest 85 4Runner off to college so I don't have anything for the trail. Partly from his suggestion, finally settled on a Scout as the best combination of size, capability, and V8 power plus the roof had to be able to come off. Searched for quite a while to find the right truck and picked this up last spring. Original AZ truck with no rust to speak of, kind of a unicorn of a Scout.

Spent last spring and summer gathering parts and started the actual teardown and build last September. Still not done but getting closer. Currently working on wiring and cooling system. Figured I should get going on the build thread before it's done. I'll fill in what's been done and go from there. It's going to be big and strong and green so decided to name it Shrek.

The plan was initially to do a mild build, sort of a restomod, maybe D44s on both ends and 33's. Started building some sliders to begin with.

Pieces cut out, all 3/16" steel based on a design I saw on a friend's Scout.

Test fitting the ends.

Welded up.

Ready for paint.

Installed and painted.

Somewhere around this time frame last spring, I got to thinking about how I wheel and how the rocks break things around here. Figured a pair of D44's would be marginal with 35's. I took my wife on a trip and she was complaining about how the exhaust stunk and asked if I could fix it. I said sure, just need a newer fuel injected engine. She said go ahead, so I had Tanner Lamb of LambFab start looking for a 5.3L/4L60. With the horsepower of the 5.3L, there was no way the axles would hold up, so also started looking for a Dana 60 for front and a 14b for the back. Andrew over at LetzRoll said he could get me a high pinion Ford D60 and a disk brake 14b but would take a bit of time. Tanner had started parting out his old Toyota around this time and had a set of used Deaver leaves and Fox shocks tuned to each other so I picked those up too.

Tanner located an engine and trans for me after a little while, but his supplier had mislead him about the mileage on it. He let me know and took it back and then replaced it with another lower mileage version. As a bonus, this one turned out to be a 2006 L33 aluminum block version.

While I was waiting for the axles, I put a pair of better seats in and started the cage.

Pair of Corbeau's. Built some custom mounts out of the original bench seat mounts.

Got the bender out and started on the cage.

Back half roughed out.

Front pieces tacked in place. The tubes going down past the dash were a real booger to get bent to clear everything. After multiple bends and several hours, got them to clear everything.

Dash spreader bar in place.

After paint.

Axles showed up after a while. D60 was from back east and was pretty rusty.

After a few hours with a wire wheel, had them cleaned up enough to start the gear setup.

I had LetzRoll set up the front and do a shave on the 14b. I decided to do the gear setup on the 14b since it's quite a bit easier. Put 5.38's in both ends and Yukon Grizzly lockers. Upgraded the front outers to 35 spline alloys and put some Yukon Hardcore hubs on it.

Finally, last September, quit driving it and got busy with the teardown.

Old D44 out.

Clean slate to start with.

Trying to keep it as low as I can so kept the springs outside the frame. Came up with these mounts which sort of copy the stock ones but are stronger.

Springs hung from the new mounts. Moved the back axle back about 5" so I wouldn't have to cut the body by the cab.

Back shocks are 14" travel so had to bring the mounts up through the floor.

Shock hoop tucked in nicely behind the back seat so I can keep seating for four.

What was the suspension setup in the "before" picture? Looks like an IH Only North reverse shackle up front with stock springs, and maybe 2.5" lift in the rear?

I love that grill. Just about my favorite style.

It definitely had a shackle reversal up front, don't know the brand and 4" Rancho springs and shocks. It had 32's on it and they rubbed a little. Those wheelwells were really small.

Trying to decide if I should paint the center of the grille inside the chrome black and the rest body color or what. The plan is to paint it the green like some Chevy trucks from around 1999, Meadow green I think.

Went to one main leaf to test shock travel and clearances.

Fully stuffed.

Fully drooped.

Twisted up. Hope it twists this well with all the leaves in place. The springs have orbital eyes so should flex pretty good.

Front spring hanger

Spring hanger bolted on temporarily trying to get caster angle figured out.

Springs in place with weight on them.

Shackle hangers for back of front springs. Width of the axle put these at an awkward spacing. Shackle will have to run right up against the frame. Used the existing holes from the previous shackles to put the nut on.

Front hanger welded on and gusseted.

Shackle hangers in place.

Sitting on the springs for real.

On the springs, fenders trimmed.

This shows how much I needed to cut in the rear to fit 40's.

Looks like there's too much room in the fenderwells until I twist it up. Might need to cut more when I get the real tires.

Thanks, trying to keep it as low as possible for stability. Frame height is about 22 1/2" right now, should end up around 24 with the final tires.

Not exactly build related, but had to do the clutch on my Dodge a little while back. While the t-case was out, snapped a pic of the 273 next to my Atlas. Amazing how large the t-case from the Dodge is. No way would that thing fit between the frame rails.

Crossmember started.

Crossmember installed.

Atlas in place

Had to clearance the floor a bit to rotate the t-case up as much as possible.

Welded some metal in to cover the gap, then sprayed it with undercoating.

Exhaust parts. Using manifolds from a 2010 Camaro SS, figuring if they support over 400hp they should flow good enough for my 5.3. Going with 2.25" tube from the manifolds into a y-pipe, then into a small cat then a Flowmaster knockoff and a short turndown.
