I finally got around to making some tube fenders. They're not done yet, I am still adding a few more pieces. I still need to cut out the rest of the fender also.
Pat, You can't drive!!! :flipoff2: It took years to get my right side beat in and it doesn't look that bad! :smokin:Hooper said:That's not where I usually rub. I usually rub the quarters, or else higher up on the fender...
If I were going to exo, which I am not, I would run something about even with the middle of the fender/quarter.... That seems to be where I get the most contact... Of course, if I learned to drive, I might rub a bit less... Actually, until two trips ago, my fenders were fine, but I slipped sideways on a log and crumpled that passenger fender while trying to follow Binder around some ugly stuff ...

On a side note I did a Photo shoot with 4 wheel and Offroad in Moab over on the sand hills at Proving grounds during the heep Safari.. :grinpimp:
You took the 2wd line... wisely, considering the driver.RustoleumWhite said:Actually, for a while the only thing you "massaged" was the last foot of the rear quarters... where all wheeled scouts take it. And it wasn't that bad at that.
Lately pat has stopped learning how to drive and just plowed his way threw... rather than assess his situation and line up better (or save it for another day )
Lots of fun when he tries an obstacle to the point that he gets total out of position, blows a u-joint and has to drag the side of the truck against a tree to get out... and still doesn't make it :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
I wisely went around and didn't break anything
Hooper ~ If my Scout looks anywhere close to that ~ it'd be a buggy within a month or two!Hooper said:

In fact, my Scout looks better than that and will still become a buggy in a month or two.
Maybe you west-coast guys can't ~ but when police officers drive around in tube buggies ~ and tubed Toys and Zuki's are running around town like it aint no thing ~ then I do. Heck, as long as we have a plate on it, and it's not posing a serious danger to others, cops let us drive anything around.Hooper said:<chuckle>
Yes, but you can't run around town in a buggy!! I can still DD mine. In fact, it is sitting in the parking lot right now
My big thing is that the 79 Scout I *inherited* from a past employee turns out to be a little more rusty than I originally thought ~ so its going to be easier to turn it into a rear-buggy tube job w/ Scout quarters fastened to it than having to replace the rockers (inner and outer), floors, bed, quarters, etc....And, most of the time when folks comment, they say things like *Now that (insert incorrect vehicle manufacturer) gets used the way it was meant to be used* or something similar...

Heck, we'd drive TC (Project 2) around on a second's notice ~ we drove it to a couple in-town shows, get lunch, not to mention the owner driving to us for any modifications he wanted to do.
Now if I had one of those Rice-Rocket Honda/Toy/Nissan/Mazda slot racers ~ THEN I'd get pulled over.

That first one should be titled "Hooper sitting and spinning on rock"..... I didn't see much climbing go on. :flipoff2:Hooper said:

There are no annual (or ever) inspections in Montana.Hooper said:DK all the laws out here. But, windshield (or else goggles), mud flaps, bumper size, height restrictions, lift restrictions, plus the challenge of getting a license plate for a tube buggy to begin with, state patrol inspections, etc, etc, etc... It can be done, it just is not easy, nor is it usually practical up here... Not to mention, where do you put the groceries? <chuckle>

And as long as you started with a licensed "something" and modified it, you just keep the same VIN tag and plates on the modified tube-chassis rig as you did on the parts donor.
So you could build a tube-buggy using the Hooper parts, and continue to license it as a Scout II.. er.. I mean SSII.. no, wait.. "Station Wagon"
There you are.
I already have a Scout I can only drive in the summer, and it's far from a tube buggy still.. but a tube-buggy would be worthless during prime wheeling season unless I built a fully enclosed cab for it. Even with the old hardtop on, -20 was just not too pleasant.. I can't imagine going topless and doorless at -20. I'd have to retire from wheelin'.
I think Hooper's just showing he's not a shallow web-wheeler / mall-crawler.. he doesn't care how his Scout *LOOKS*.. it's about how it WORKS. Mark me down in that category with Hoop.
As for you weenies taking the bypass.. what fun is that?
I need to spend some time wheeling in WA.. Hooper and I can see who can do the most tree-rubbin' on one run.
What's the fun without some body damage?
Anyone notice the bright spot on the tree?
 :flipoff2:
Is a tree rubber like birth control for Oaks?Hooper said:Yep. Tom has it right!! Pppffftt to go arounds!!
Also, I am glad Tom was clear that we are tree rubbers, not tree huggers..
I can remember a couple years ago when patty didn't care for dents.... Even used to pound them out to an extend (he's NOT a body man). Now they have gotten too deap for him to pound outtsm1mt said:I think Hooper's just showing he's not a shallow web-wheeler / mall-crawler.. he doesn't care how his Scout *LOOKS*.. it's about how it WORKS. Actually, I was on the trail, HE was on the "bypass" :flipoff2:As for you weenies taking the bypass.. what fun is that?

I wheel... honstly I do...
I got the dents to prove it...
it take a REAL man to wheel a Scout throught the trees WITH OUT dents (or atleast too many).
So sounds like I need a front Lock-rite and were on for a re-match patty??? Ahw heck, I'll do it with the front open so you'll HAVE to flog your junk to submission to follow me :flipoff2:
True, that is a very nasty spot with good reason to get tense. Hooper handled it like a pro.Hooper said:Ask Binder when we went up Sack Up, and I got light going around one corner. I was pretty tense as the driver side went light on me... But that would have been a NASTY roll.

Last time out Scoutilac and I drove that trail backward which puts you WAY! ugly driver side down. Definately gets your attention.
and who's winch line pulled your sorry ass off that tree?????Hooper said:
Yep, you took the gravel road around the fun stuff while we attempted the obstacle. Scoutillac made it. I came close, but broke... Maybe next time I'll make it..
Or, at least, it takes someone who isn't afraid to skip an obstacle and thereby avoid almost certain damage.
Touchy, touchy...RustoleumWhite said:and who's winch line pulled your sorry ass off that tree?????
Kevy made it, sure. But he had to work at it and couldn't make the line he wanted. You were working the same line he ended up taking and couldn't make it and broke.... I didn't feel like breaking my junk that day (and I WOULD have popped a front joint just like you did, they were pretty dry when I changed them ) So I decided to save it for another day. But if you want me to spank your ass just to bruise your ego... I suppose I could.....
[/b]
so since when has taking "almost certain damage" been a requirement of running a line?? You been hanging out with tube buggy guys too much. Body damage happens, and I usually don't cry about it, but I don't go looking for it either.... Isn't part of the challenge of wheeling to make an obstacle WITH OUT dents, creases or breaking sh*t?? Let me know if it isn't, cause obviously I have something wrong...
We dont have trees here in the desert Hoop. We have Chollas and Suguaros. Not as much body damage if you slid into one, just hope you dont get any stickers in your arm while doing it.Hooper said:ROFL. And Sully brings the funny. Except, around here, they are all fir trees. None of that nice smooth Oak bark to rub up against. We get the rough, course stuff...
