I know this isn't hard core tech, but what is around here lately? Anyway, I'm looking at a t-18 trans to put in my Scout. Does it matter what vehicle it came out of? This one came out of a 66-79 Jeep and is a wide ratio. That's all I know about it. How strong are these? Will it hold up to the little motor and 35 inch tires?
I started searching after I posted. The more I read, the more confused I got. It seems IH used two different mounting styles. Now I don't know what. I may be able to get a t-19 wide if the local parts guy has one, but then I need the bellhousing to match, and what about the holes in the tranny cover, will they line up with the shifters??? Can I adapt my hydraulic clutch to a mechanical clutch if I need to? I guess I just gotta pick a path to follow and answer my own questions.
You'll notice, when you pull your t-90, that it has a tiny input shaft. Thats obstical #1 cuz as far as I know, nobody had an input shaft like that but IH. The T-18 NV has, if its from a 4cyl 80 or 800 is still a a close ratio. 4 to 1 1st gear. Your T-90 was 3.33 to 1 so not much gain in the crawl department. Problem #2 is the twisted bellhousing. IF you get a 4 speed froma 4 cyl, it has to be from an 80 or 800. A scout II 4cyl has regular style bellhouse pattern. I've heard of some guys taking the close ratio 18's and putting Ford wide ratio 18 guts in them but I've never done it myself. I'm sure Mechanos or somebody would know more about it than me.
I never did find a T-18 wide in the 4wd version nor could I find a 6 spline rear main shaft to mate up to my D20. However i did get a T-19 wide and bought a 6 spline RMS from Mr Scout. The swap was a few hrs well worth it.
I have had 2 of them. One was in a 66 800 and the other one is lying on my buddies woodshed floor. I'm not sure what year rig it came out of. Roughly 6 and 1/2 turns of the mainshaft gets me 1 turn at the output. Attache that to my spicer 18, bolt the Warn OD i've been sitting on for years to that, attache the PTO adapter to that. I'll be styling with low 1st and .75 5th, with my factory PTO winch no less :grinpimp: I already get 16mpg with the 152. I wonder what I'll get when its done.
Snoopy had one...
One thing I've learned is that you can't say IH never did X or always used Y, because someone will prove you wrong.
I have heard that some people have swapped the gears and input shaft from a Ford wide t-18 and put them in the IH case. So I'm thinking, why go to all that bother if the Jeep unit will bolt in?
Its almost done. Still fighting the EFI stuff. If its not one problem its another.
Its not just bellhouse stuff. Look at your T-90. It has a super short input shaft that is tiny. I have about 5 twisted bellhousings. They are junk for anything but attaching T-90's or early T-18's. Get your Jeep 18, ford 18, and T-90 and try to make a wide box like Rusty said.
use one of the shorty twisted bellhousings and make an adapter to the Jeep T18.
