These are the gauges on my BIL's Scout. I believe the dash cutout is from D&C. Very clean. Very nice work. Really updates the dash, but I think it was pretty spendy.
I have him talked into making the wheeling run end of July. We'lll see if anything comes up last minute for him though... Now, if we could find a nice trailer that could haul 2 rigs... wonder if we can find one to rent... he has a big F-350 that could tow it...
To late, to date I don't think he has really wheeled it yet.... and he bought it cause his over built jeep was "too" nice to beat up
new, round gauges look good but unless you have lots of $$, and NO working gauges worth a damn nor a source for some... I think its a waste of $$$. Over 3-bills JUST for the gauges... and thats a cheap package...
besides, I'm kind of partial to the square gauges.... and all mine work, but the spedo... but thats not the gauges fault
Too late. He *is* planning to go in July, but I don't think he will try any high risk lines... He'll wheel the *open* stuff where he isn't likely to roll or scratch his rig (he doesn't worry about branch scratches and stuff... yet).
He has an appointment for complete body prep and paint next month though. Putting a $1500 paint job on it, I believe... uch:
I kept telling him, don't make it pretty, don't make it nice, leave it as a beater.. but, he couldn't do it... Still, at least it is big enough he can take it camping, playing in the snow, and such. He had a jeep, and it was tricked out and pretty also, but too small, so not only could he not wheel it, he couldn't really take it out on family outings. This is one step up, at least.. <chuckle>
And, yes, he knows I make fun of him for making his rigs too pretty..

I'm with you. My old fashioned guages work fine. I did add autometer guages to my SSII, (because someone gave them to me for a present) and they are nice. I like having a *number* of lbs pressure for the oil and water temp... I need to buy a new temp sender and drop it into my block for the stock gauge, since I stole the hole for the existing one to plumb the new gauge. Mangled the old sender when I took it out. I know they are cheap, but I have to get a manifold plug to break loose so I can thread the sender into it.
I have a lot of more pressing needs than that type of bling. But, no question it looks good.
He had a set of autometer gauges in his Scout II that he pulled when he put these in. So, he gave me his old set....
I am *thinking* about pulling the volt gauge out of my cluster, and putting another temp sending unit in. I would run that one to my tranny, in some fashion. I'd like to look into plumbing it inline with the coolant lines, but that may be too complicated for the next couple of weeks... Still thinking if there is a simple way to do that... sure would be nice to have a tranny temp gauge in the cluster. I don't care much about what my voltage is doing, since the gauge on my panel works fine for that. I am running the extra capacity pan, so there *probably* is room to drill a hole in the pan, and plumb it there, into the trailing wall of the pan, then run it up and forward to the dash. That would keep it from getting tangled on anything and torn off. But, I would have to drill the pan, and weld a nut or something on the inside to thread the sender into.... unless there is an easier way...
is he launching a nuke from that cockpit?? I mean Damn!! looks clean but a little too busy... would like to know if the dash plates can have fewer holes pre cut in them?
That would be a great "stock" appearance item...adding the stock sender back for the auto tranny temps...Especially considering the need to know the fluid temp in your slushbox.
I am looking forward to doing the July run with you guys...I am really wide...but at least it will be dry out. No real sloshing off of the tree trunks
EDIT***oh and just drive the things over to Little Naches...I drove my scary ass pig over 410 and back. It will be a beautiful drive.

Only real *extra* gauge is the air pressure. The rest of that is all stuff I would *like* to have. I would *add* a tranny temp guage also though... I don't think I would bother with the air pressure gauge. Tach would be nice, but on an auto, kind of superfluous. Still nice to have though...
It is *busy* though. Heck of a lot easier to change the bulbs when they burn out though. I can only see half my speedo at night, one of the bulbs is burned out, but heck if I am going to tear everything apart to change a bulb, that is none to bright to begin with... <chuckle>

Too busy? Not really. I like the way the guages will blend into the panel ~ the rings are the same as the panel. Just some black & brushed alum to look at.

We have two styles, this is the 5-hole (5 small holes), the other is a 4-hole ~ without the middle guage (yes, everything is skooted in a bit so it doesn't look funny).
But I'm sure a couple guy's on this board will be more than ready to tell you that these can be made in about an hour with a $5 peice of aluminum and a good harbor frieght file and hole-saw. :shaking:

I like having my tach with my slushbox.. lets me know when it's time to shift.. well, lets me know when it's time to start shifting before the tach stops climbing, anyhow..
As for the bulbs.. one low-buck fix I've found is to take a rag, or a greasy sleeve, and wipe the dirt and grime off of the gauge covers.
You'd swear the bulbs were burned out just a moment ago, but this little miracle trick REALLY brightens up an otherwise dull dash.

No shit....since they are not gasketed...It is amazing how much dust can settle on the back (vacuum) side of the glass...
I wiped mine and blew off the faces of the guages and WOW it made it soo much nicer.
The next trick would be to go with LEDs....Much brighter...can even go with a color scheme...and last much much longer. Your stock wiring won't mind it either.

I bought mine from Damian for the follwing reasons:
1. At the time it was a lot cheaper.
2. I don't own a drill press, nor at the time knew anyone who did. You can't cut that nicely with a hand drill, at least I don't think I can.
3. How much does a hole saw cost? A good (Milwaukee or equivalent brand) large one runs 20-30 bucks. You need two for the two sizes. You've already got 40-60 bucks wrapped up in it and you haven't even wasted your time measuring and cutting. Let's use the upper end of the scale, 60 bucks in hole saws, 5 bucks for material, 5 bucks for Dremel discs to cut the radio hole. Add another 15 bucks for all the material you ruin when the Dremel slips or you drill a hole a half inch off and it runs into another. That's about what I paid.
As to why would someone use the round gauges, I wasn't about to waste a ton of my time tracking down why none of my gauges worked properly, only to have them working marginally well but still not actually knowing how hot my motor was or how much oil pressure it had. I need numbers on my gauges. I have a '95 F250 (IH motor!) that I am now looking at replacing the gauges with some sort of flat plate and Auto Meters as well, because "NORMAL" doesn't tell me anything.
I understand IH guys are a VERY do-it-yourself bunch, but if you really sit back sometimes and weigh the cost vs. the benefit, sometimes it makes sense to swallow your pride and install something someone else built. Bling for the sake of bling is gay. Bling that works is cool in my book.
If you make a Christmas list and include part numbers, you never have to pay for Scout parts yourself! My inlaws bought my $60 tach (10K rpm, the most optimistic tach in the world) and a $270 electronic speedo this past Xmas. You can't pass up a deal like that.

P.S. My birthday and anniversary are next week...I need a 392 and some D60s...
i dig it! planning on doing this myself in the near future, but i want to use the stock panel and fill in the square holes to cut round ones. i like the stock look. my b&m shifter has chrome on it and it reflects in my eyes often. im gonna stay with the matt black dash i have. although i do like the bling d&c's panel adds to the dash.
